The Carpet Monster Returns!!!

Hi All, Last night I discovered one of my smoke grenade launchers was missing from the Bradley turret! [banghead][banghead][banghead] Inevitably, it’s nowhere to be found. So now I have to scratchbuild some new ones. I’ll have to do both so they match of course.[|(] But anyway, I was wondering if you guys could help me out. I could use some ideas, close-up pics or anything that could possibly help me out in any way. I have a few ideas rolling around my brain, but as I’m a novice, I would really appreciate some ideas from the pros. Thank You, -Spencer[:)]

Hey Spencer,

Sounds like a good time to do a little scratch building (styrene rod or tube…) or try resin casting from one of the originals.

Ron

If you’re going to scratchbuild replacements, as Ron said, now is an opportune time to try out new techniques. Also, depending on how you feel about the kit, some scratchbuilt details to go along with the smoke dischargers would be good experience, and would probably prove to be fun! [:)]

Well, I have some styrene sheets. I didn’t buy them so I don’t know the thickness. I’m not sure how to read a dial caliper. I guess it’s .060" Does this sound right? What does it convert to? It reads 60 on the dial, so it’s almost 1/10th of an inch thick. Is that 60 hundredths of an inch? I should have payed more attention in High School[D)]
Anyway, I hope this makes sense. I was thinking of using the styrene for the bases and finding some copper wire that’s the right width of the tubes (after stripping) and leaving a piece of the wire insulation on the tips that’s about the same size as the tube covers. Then fill the tips with Squadron putty and shape to the correct dimensions. How’s that sound? Either that or sprue work. [%-)]

Oh, I thought this thread was about the photos I post on the board! [;)]

Exactly the same thing came to mind. He-he-he.

I luv that carpet of yours, Larry.[:D]

what are you modelling over. if it is flas enough you can put a flash light on the ground, and it will shine on the wall or on some flat surface and it will catch the little piece and make a shadow, try that and let me know if u found it.

Don’t worry Spencer. As soon as you scratch build both of the turrets, redoing them 2 or 3 times each because you don’t like something about them…countless painstaking hours of hunting down tubing, sheet styrene…cutting, filing, sanding, filling…get them just right…

you’ll find your missing launcher, right under your nose. [:p] [:D]

Good luck on it!!

Eric

Yeah erush, Tell me about it! I know! But as Kurt Vonnegut said, “So It Goes.” -“Slaughterhouse 5.” Anybody read that one? I’ve allready been working on this kit since the Hobby Lobby sale before last. What next? Wait! Please don’t answer that!
Tankbuild, as far as the flashlight goes. It could be betweem the modeling room and the paint booth, aka-The Garage. I tried that last night because I think it is in the room, but It’s not worth it. Thanks anyways though. I wanted to enhance my skills, now I got it! [sigh]

[:D] I was working on ISU-152 and i dropped the PE handel to the gas tank, and could not find it. I got real frustrated. I went to the restroom and pulled my zipper down, and the zipper fell out---------------into the toilet[xx(][:p]. Turns out that little bugger fell into the little crevice at the top of mi pants.[swg]

P.S. ive read Slaughter House 5 for school.

ROFL…I’ve lost my fair share of parts in the carpet…it stinks.

about a year or to ago me and my freind duckman had just baught a kumber mull kit n cracked it open waiting 4 the city bus wen we got home to build it we noticed the chimney was missing n the scratch built one looked horible about 3 mounths later he found the same one lying in the dirt at the bus stop haha. good luck building new launchers

That’s exactly how it usually works !!!

Went and bought some 1/16 brass tubing today. Do you guys know if this would be accurate for 1/35 scale? It’s a little thinner than the actual Tamiya styrene smoke grenade launchers, but I think after priming and painting etc., they should have a little more depth. (at least I hope they will!) I figured it best to get the closest size under, rather than larger size. Since I have to mount 4 to each base, I would’ve had to enlarge the bases and I feel that woud’ve made them too big. Then again, I’m not sure because I’ve never seen one in the flesh. I have to find some better pics. If anybody has any, please feel free to shoot them my way!
[?] I was also wondering if it would be accurate to leave the grenade tubes open without the caps on them, as if they’d been fired? Or if Bradley crews always keep the caps on the tubes? etc. etc. Cheers, -Spencer[C=:-)]
