The Albatros D-V "Weekend Edition" - Weekend #6 (Although I'm losing count)

I got the decals on and the first couple of layer of fading onto the finish. Still some details to go as well as the rigging. One or two weekends to go I suspect.

I just love these birds! There’s simply nothing more colorful. You’re doing a fine job! [tup]

Thanks. I’m spending a lot more time on this than I planned. This really was going to be a quick build. But I just couldn’t bring myself to not put in the effort to make her come out as well as possible.

Great looking bird so far. Did you use kit supplied lozenge decals?

Man, that a colorful one! Coming along nicely I must say. [tup]

The upper colors are Eduard decals although they were not supplied with the kit. The lower colors are from Aeromaster and they were not as forgiving as the upper during application. They are a bit transparent and didn’t react well to the Solvaset.

Both upper and lower have been post shaded by tinting the clear flat lacquer with either a drop of white (in the field of the upper surfaces and along the spine of the fueslage) and then a drop of black around the edges of the upper surfaces.

Thanks for the info. I have the ProfitPak of this kit started and noted the garish color of the upper camo that Eduard supplied. Your solution to tint the clear worked very nice as I didn’t even recognize the decal on yours as the Eduard offering. You just saved me 8 bucks from having to buy new lozenge decals! Thanks!

You’re welcome. I’ve been using that tinting approach for a lot of a/c. It’s really good for Naval aircraft where the panels all tend to lighten up in the field but not around the perimeter when the surfaces curve downwards. Just keep it to thin mixtures with only a little color and use multiple layers to build up the effect. I described the technique more fully in my article in Scale Aircraft Modelling last summer on my Fairey Gannet. It works great of fabric covered a/c as well.

dcaponell- Looks like a nice build. Eduard never did say how many weekends go into the weekend edition. I’ve got two of their Fw-190, wonder how many weekends those will take.

I built the A-6 OOB and the A-8 with the Big-Ed set and some scratch building. The articles were published in the Feburary (the cover article) and March issues of Scale Aircraft Modelling. I had about 40 hours in the A-6 and about double that in the A-8. The important thing to remember is that if you’re going to close up the panels around the nose then leave out most of the details around the gun feed chutes or the panels won’t fit correctly. The kit is engineered to be shown open and doesn’t close up that easily.
