Tennessee Aviation Museum

I visited the Tennessee Aviation Museum in Sevierville, TN a couple of weeks ago and they have a number of aircraft on display. They range from WW-II warbirds (P-47, P-51, TBM/TBF) to Korean vintage (F-86, MiG-17, MiG-21). They also have a cockpit from an A-4 and another from a B-25 on display. In addition there are several engines on display, but piston and turbojet.

If you are ever in the vicinity I strongly recommend taking a run by there since it is a very interesting place for airplane junkies to visit. The GPS coordinates are N35.86020 W83.53470.

Photos from my trip are at This Link on my web site (the museum is toward the bottom of the page). The photos are reduced to 1024x768 resolution but were originally 5 megapixel (2592x1944) from my camera. I also have several others, primarily detail photos, that I didn’t put on that web page. If anyone is looking for something else let me know what you need and I’ll see if I have anything that shows it.

That’s excellent Scott [:D] Thaks for sharing.

Looks like you had a great trip through some beautiful (but damp!) country. I hear the Dragon gets pretty hairy with all the touristas trying to prove they’re Mario Andretti. Good to hear you kept the topside up and the bottom side down.

I just came back from touring Central Alberta, where the only turns were pulling into the parking lot! [(-D] My camera sucks so I don’t have many pics. The few airplanes I did get to see were so crammed together it’s near impossible for a good shot. I did take a ride in a 1939 Waco Biplane which was a hoot! Had to stop for some Dall Sheep crossing the highway coming into Radium Hot Springs, they walked across like they owned the place!

Your friend is going to have a real fun trip this summer. I haven’t heard from her, and hope she doesn’t need to call. She’s always welcome to visit and have a shower!

Cheers,

Bill

Drew, glad you liked it. Hope there’s something there you can use.

It was a great trip, Bill, and I had a blast. I hit rain most of the day on 7/2, as well as the first evening, but the rest of the time wasn’t too bad. There were some clouds up in the mountains which were interesting to ride through, but even with limited visibility the views were magnificent. The photos don’t do them justice.

The Dragon is, from what I understand, a zoo at times. We stopped at Deal’s Gap for about an hour and every couple of minutes someone ws pulling out to run it. Everything from cruisers and scooters to guys in full racing leathers with barely street-legal bikes. I just rode my own pace and had a great time.

Sounds like fun! I’ve seen a couple of Wacos but not many. It would be fun to take a ride in one. I’ve never seen Dall Sheep either, other than in pictures. It would be cool to see them in real life.

I have to admit I did get my fill of curvy roads for a few days. I was glad to hit a nice, straight interstate heading back to Nashville!

That twit! I talked to her a couple of days before she left and she said she was fixing to send you an email. She does tend to get sidetracked rather easily and I guess that’s what happened. With her there is honestly no telling. I do appreciate your being backup in case she has trouble though. She’ll be back through that area in a few weeks, I think. There aren’t many roads from Alaska back through Canada

She crossed from the Yukon Territory into Alaska yesterday afternoon. Communications have been “Spotty” at best and I haven’t talked to her much since she left Washington state. I do know she is having a great time, and taking tons of pictures. Her trip report so far is at This Link and it is quite interesting. A lot of it is photos only so far but she’ll get me the reports to go with the photos at some point.

Scott : Great pictures, Thanks for sharing !!

Greg

Scott, looks like you had a great time! That museum is pretty cool! I think it’s odd they describe the machine guns in the T-33 as 12.7 mm instead of .50 cal. Thanks for posting!

Thanks, guys. Glad you enjoyed the pix. It was a great trip and just getting to that museum finally was worth it all. But, as a bonus, I saw some great scenery and rode some great motorcycle roads so it was all a lot of fun.

Good point and you’re right, I didn’t notice that. It is unusual that for a Lockheed plane they would list it as 12.7mm. I guess they figured a half inch is a half inch is a half inch

I visited the Museum about 3 years ago when we were passing through the area. The wife actually found it and it was a nice treat! The two P-47D’s were beautiful! A nice little “gem” of a museum tucked away in the Tennessee hills! Recently caught a short segment on TV about them showing the P-47’s in flight.

Scott: I finally scrolled down through your webpage…great pictures! There are a few I can use in the future on some builds. Plus, I have to mark that museum down in my “places to visit” list. Thank you for sharing both your pictures and the museum info.

That’s about when I found out about it  It’s a great place to visit and I’ve been trying to find time to get there for a couple of years. Finally decided it was time and visited it in conjunction with another trip.

Let me know which ones you need and I’ll send you the larger ones. They are a lot larger than the ones on my web site and show detail better.
