Tankets??

I was looking through a book and it had some American GI’s standing next to a tanket. Man those things were TINY![:0] I also know that the polish used these.
Can somebody tell me what in the heck were they used for?

I believe they were used as target practice for German tanks.[;)]

Tankettes were developed by many countries and their uses were wide and varied. They were used as small cargo carriers, recon vehicles, artillary spotters, and radio relay points. They could tow medium loads, transport a few personnel quickly, and get into areas that wheeled vehicles would have problems. Some tankettes were fitted with small arms and were used against infantry or more commonly against civilian populations in occupied areas. There were many, many jobs they could do…just as long as they didn’t come up against their “big brothers”.

I assume they were used as light infantry support plus what has been said already in the place of heavier tanks due to the economic restraints placed on those nations. By that I mean the amount of oil, metals and skilled technicians. The Japanese had tankettes because they didnt have enough natural resources to make the heavy tanks. I assume it would be nearly the same with Poland.

thanks, I kind figured they would be going up against a sherman or a pz 4.

I also know that I would never have gotten into one of those for 2 words, death trap. Pretty much how jason said it.

the japanese pretty much dug theirs in and used them as defense, from what i understand

Actually, polands army, would have been germany’s infinite superior, in around 1945, because they had their new weapons all planned out, and were started to try to get them to production, it is just the germans like 1939 a whole lot better, but the poles did have the best medium bomber at the start of the war, and it was superior to anything the germans had…

My understanding is that Tanketts were designed/made in between WWI and WWII. Tanks wrere in their infancy. At the time we had monsters like the M2 and Stuart M3. Of course I could be wrong on some of this.

its hard to imagine the M3 a “monster”!
