I am new to armor, from aircraft. I have just finished an early Sherman and an M8 Howitzer. I weathered them and I think they look better than any aircraft I have done. My question is, am I accurate to dry brush silver? On aircraft, as surfaces wear, the bare metal shows through and it is silver in aoppearance. For tanks, what color was the steel or whatever that was used to manufacture them. In other words, without olive drab, what color are tanks, bare bones? I know this has been answered a dozen times before. Thanks,
i usually us tamiya metallic grey or MM steel.
You can also use a pencil to show bare metal worn through on a tank. Simply draw the spot on the tank. Remember though, unless it is a high wear area that gets rubbed constantly, it will quickly rust and not stay bright.
I barely use silver …just base color+ white …only on high wear area just a litttlleee silver MM
I can’t say how to reproduce a bare steel colour. I have not got it right to my satisfaction. To find the colour of real steel, I go to a scrap yard or welding shop to see bare steel. Of course getting that colour on a model is the real trick for me.[%-)] Good luck.
Matt
I use silver and pencil, sometimes I put the silver first then put pencil over it to creat a dull but yet shinny look.
I use a range of metallic paints from Games WOrkshop, from Warhammer fame. They’re very good, and I’ve had great results, but just don’t try to airbrush them.
