Tamiya's 1/48th P-51D Mustang 357thFG WIP Update 7 2/9/26

Update 6
Not much to go on but I’m working on the wing root area along with the upper cowling fitment. The back section where it meets up against the forward firewall was a bear.
Who would have thought that there would be a nice gap here? Every other place had a nice, uniform fit except here. I decided to use a thin strip from Plastruct.
I laid the plastic strip in the gap and applied Tamiya’s extra thin cement and lightly sanded it down. Later today I’ll tackle it and hopefully I’ll have more WIPs!

Great work. Building one myself. I added the Quinta cockpit decals to my build—looks amazing

Thank you thank you! I have a few of those sets for the P-39/P-40 but not for the 51.
I like em but at the same time, they take the fun out of detailing!

Update 7
I got a litle more done on the Stang today. I removed the gear struts, gear doors n such from the sprue trees and got them cleaned up.
I got over the biggest challenge and it wasn’t that
bad at all. I cleaned up the seams on the tires and since this build will essentially be out of the box, I decided to rescribe the tread pattern on the tires
The before and after.. I am pretty pleased in the way it turned out!

Thank you thank you! Once I was done, my eyes went buggy and my hands were shaking haha.
My daughter callled me weird for what I was doing

Wow, that tread pattern is great work.

Thank you Scott! It was definitely a PITA for sure!
With doing this rescribing and seeing the outcome, I’m a little less scared to do this again.
Not perfect but..

I have no idea what perfect looks like in my modeling. I guess I’ll go by the old phrase, “Don’t let perfect get in the way of good enough.”

To my eyes, your tires are beyond good enough, I would be really stressed to try that. I’m sure there would be several rounds of putty and rescribe for me.

I am my own worst enemy when it comes to perfect in my eyes.. Did I mention that I wear glasses? Lol
This was a test of my patience as I never had a good outcome when it came to rescribing the treads.
Trust me, I probably went through a dozen or so tires trying to perfect this method. This is where I got a lot of aftermarket tires for both the “Bs” and “Ds”.
When it comes to certain aspects of modeling, I have great deal to over think things hence going through a ton of tires.
I believe this was the first time that I dove into something without really thinking(scary) or planning.
I had the tools and had at it.

Excellent idea using the filler strip to fix those gaps. The tires turned out great.

You restored that tire tread very nicely. Very impressive actually. That is not an easy job at all :+1:

Thanks Chris and I thought so too! Seeing that it involved a panel line, I figurred that using putty wouldn’t fair well when it came to rescribing.
If you want to test your patience, try redoing the tread pattern lol

Thank you thank you! I could not agree more as my patience was really tested.
Making sure that my hand was steady was the biggest issue so I took a few breaks along the way.
In all, I am happy on how it turned out. At least for the next build, I wont be to gunn shy to do the rescribing!
