Tamiya X-19

There seems to be a lot of confusion as to just what Tamiya X-19 Smoke was created for…and especially how to apply it. Specifically with an a/b. I have it…I want to use it on a 2 piece canopy so that it looks tinted…not painted. I have found no vids proclaiming anything positive about this stuff…only complaints. But I figure that people just aren’t using it properly. Does anybody out there have a good deal of experience w/this? And had good results?

TIA

Hi there,

I have quite a few uses for X-19 and none of them involve swearing…

  1. I thin it down and then run it around landing gear wells, tire hubs, anything that needs depth. when it dries, it clings to the walls and creates a shadow… Works best if the subject is done in enamel paints but acrylics are ok to…

  2. varnished wood - mix this 50/50 with tamiya clear orange and you get a dark and very realistic varnish for anything that is wood… WW1 propellers, struts, etc. Play with the ratios to your taste.

  3. I have a wide-mouthed sealable jar of Future clear to dip canopies in… I add up to 10% of X-19 (basically a whole bottle to one mason jar of Clear) and this will help make canopy scratches and flaws disappear a little better then just Clear alone.

I also add it to any tamiys paint I’m airbrushing to impart a touch of gloss AND shadow at the same time… Just watch your ratios. I’ve also airbrushed it as a way to tone metalics around exhaust stained metal.

Good luck, hope this helps.

X-19 Smoke is actually a clear color like clear blue, green, or red, Uses for tinted windows, etcs…

WOW! That really DOES help! Thanks a mil for that info! I have renewed confidence it now and will try that 10% trick on the canopy pieces. What is your ratio to thinner when you use it as a shadow-maker?

Thanks!
