Tamiya Weathering Pastels are Flammable?

Why does my newly purchased, 3 color Tamiya weathering kit, have “Warning Flammable” written in big letters on the package?

Is it just powder, or is there a liquid included?

Very finely divided powders can be quite flammable, especially if they are made from combustable materials in the first place.

It is also possible that, if the powder is in stick form, that the binding material is combustable.

You can also ask Tamiya or the merchant to supply an MSDS.

Probably because they are flammable [:D]

Triarius,

The description of the Tamiya Weathering Masters Set, says that the weathering compound is Semi-Wet.

I never thought a weathering powder (dry) would be combustable, but I guess the liquid in the “wet” version is, also.

Most everything used in modeling is flammable, so why not the weathering sets?

They aren’t simple powders. They have a dry, paste-like form with waxy carrier/binder.

Because there is a plethora of lawyers and a dearth of common sense in the world, that’s why.

From the descriptions provided, it is probably the waxy binder that is flammable.

Unfortunately, Bill, lawyers are generally not flammable—inflammatory yes, but not flammable…

Unless you use a flamethrower…

or napalm…

or willie pete…

Bgrigg,

I’ll second the gross lack of common sense in today’s world comment. I guess that is why everything comes with ridiculous warning labels these days.

So when your model suddenly bursts into flames, Tamiya can say “We told you so” [:)].

Seriously, I’ve been using the Tamiya weathering kits for a couple of years without problems. They are not powders like the MIG pigments, but seem to have the pigments mixed with a carrier, so they are more like a firm paste. I also noticed the flammable warning, but didn’t worry about it much. Much of the materials used in modeling are flammable to some degree, just don’t use them in an open flame & all will be well.

Regards, Rick

I am not concerned about the Tamiya weathering set spontaniously combusting in front of my eyes. (Although, that would be pretty cool!) I just thought it was odd that a weathering set would have such large warnings on the package.

The amount of Warnings on Modeling Producs have become a bit over the top. Just read the warning label on Squadron’s Green Putty. They lead you to believe that everthying short of instant death occurs if you crack the safety seal on the tube!

But seriously, everything burns, if the fire is hot enough. Liquid Cement will give you a buzz if you don’t open a window, or at least turn on a fan. Spray painting without a respirator and / or a spray booth is definetly bad for you. X-acto knives will slice and dice anything they come into contact with, so just BE CAREFUL. Read ALL of the directions first, and just use some COMMON SENSE!!!
