I have just finished a experiment on disappearing tamiya paint and I have found something interesting. So, about two weeks ago I put some thinner in a old tamiya paint jar that I ultrasonic cleaned. I came back about three days ago and found that the thinner was gone. Thinking that maybe I didn’t screw the lid on tight enough, I took some isopropyl alcohol and put about an ounce in another clean tamiya jar and really tightened the lid. Came back today and found most of it gone. At this point I am thinking ‘maybe my ultrasonic cleaner damage the jars’ but I went and looked at an old tamiya paint I had and it also seemed pretty empty. Now maybe my house is pretty dry or warm and that doing it or could it be the seal on tamiya paint jars be not airtight. I have my doubt (that maybe tamiya is masterminding a scheme to cheat it customers out of their money on paint the will destroy itself) but what do you guy think.
That is weird. I have some usable Tamiya paint from almost 30 years ago. Maybe it’s the newer paint? I’m not sure what he ultrasound could have done to the jars. Maybe a physicist could help.
I’ve been using Tamiya paints for decades. I have never had any issues with the paint or thinner. I don’t know what is going on with your experiences. Very odd. But I don’t think that is any thing deliberant on Tamiya’s part. Maybe others have better idea.
Dang! I had like fifty lawyers ready to make some lawsuits. Just kidding, but I also notice that some old paints I have had for years are fine. Maybe I just have a few defective jars.
Only thing I can think of is the ultrasonic opened up pores, pitted the plastic lid, or otherwise damaged the sealing surface on the lids (if you tossed those in too).
Try putting some foil or plastic wrap on your test jar before you put the lid on and try again.
I have the same thing with my Tamiya glue. It was on sale so I bought 5 jars. I have only used one and the others are between half-full and empty. It may be that the chemicals are eating through the seal. Some of the seals on my old bottles crumble when I open them.
The glue!? I use Tamiya liquid cement all the time. Never had a problem with it. You just have to make sure the lid and inner seal is on good and tight. Just hand tight is all it needs.
I will try that. I’ll start tomorrow (Friday), need to find another clean jar besides the tamiya ones, and post pictures in a week, the same time it took the other one to disappear.
Odd behavior. I’ve has my Tamiya paints sitting in my garage for a couple of months now and haven’t noticed and change in the amount of solvent present. Ultrasonic cleaners are interesting creatures. Did you physically look at the bottles to see if there are cracks/chips in the rim of the bottle. I’ve never looked at the paint bottles, but my thin cement has a foam seal in the cap that can come loose. Is that present in the paint bottles?
No I’ve look at the jars and they seem to have no kind of rubber or plastic seal (this is a brand new jar too). Like I said though it could probably just be a rare coincidence that I got two defective jars, I have got defective paint in the past.
Tamiya lids have 2 parts; the threaded lid itself, and a softer clear plastic liner. Maybe you don’t have the liner for some reason. that would explain the evaporation.
I see what you mean. I was talking about that little white ring that comes on tamiya products, like the glue. What I meant to say is there was none of those but there is that plastic inner part.
Cdn Colin you are a genius! I just went to run that experiment with the thinner and realized that on the two jars that evaporated the inner plastic ring was there but it wasn’t all the way, causing the lid not to seal tightly. I’m running a new experiment now that the lid is in. I’ll tell what happens to it tonight because there is very little achohol in it, whitch will evaporate very fast if the seal is bad.
