Tamiya Tiger 1

Here is a pic of my Tamiya Tiger 1
Another pic
and the rear deck

It looks like a nice lightly weathered build. Is that Tamiya’s older Tiger I kit? It sure looks like it is. I cant tell from the pic angles, but did you drill out the smoke grenade launchers on the turret sides? I do like you use of washes and drybrushing to add shadows and highlights.

looking good there, one thing i noticed is the side skirts seem to incorrectly located. you can see the the 3 holes above them. looks like they have moved before the glue set maybe? and i can see some unpainted plastic in between the gun mantlet and the turret roof.

Dave

Yes I think you guys are correct it does need more weathering. It is an older kit(I made it in 1991!).I think the side skirts need to be re-glued as they popped off after I took the pictures!I commend you guys for having such a sharp eye!And Yes I did drill out the smoke discharger tubes!

Yes philo, its a nice build–but your side skirt either looks like it has fallen off or you’ve located in incorrectly. I’m guessing that it just fell off?–it looks like it was there where it needed to be judging by the paint line; should be easy to fix.

This is really a nice finish, and shows promise! I understand that you’re relatively young? It;s nice to see that some younger guys are discovering the joy of modeling instead of just spending hours in front of the TV or X-Box!

DOn’t get discouraged by criticism of your efforts; it’s all in the spirit of helping you become the best that you can be! Remember, we were ALL inexperienced once!

You might want to put some gloss under your decals before applying them, you have a little “silvering” going on. Put the decals on over a coat of gloss (just hit the area where your decal will go, it’s not necessary to do the WHOLE vehicle!) and apply the decal, and hit that with some Micro-Sol; that will help it to seat right and eliminate the silver “bubbles” under it.

Looking forward to more of your work![:D]

'91[:O] That was a while ago! If your gonna have another go at it in the weathering, please post more pics when your done. Maybe some before and after ones. And show the smoke launchers![;)] Like I said before, nice work!

Thanks guys but I am 42!I specialize in WW2 aircraft but like to dabble in armor from time to time.Any helpful hints are welcome so don’t hold back!

If you’re gonna update this bad boy I suggest a set of aftermarket tracks- There are plenty to choose from for the Tiger and the finished results really get the sag look right.

Yeah the tracks are too tight so they don’t sag properly.Do you recommend the individual link track sections?

Yes, the tamiya links are pretty nice. I’m not sure they sell them individually though, but do come in the Mid and Late Tiger kits. Of course you could get Fruils or MK if they make them. Arm and a leg though. AFV Club makes some and they are reasonable.

I say good effort and with the tips you got, you could tweak this guy up or use them on your next build. Always nice to see an A/C guy try out armor.

For a low-cost track upgrade (if you don’t want to go Friul or MK) you might also consider the Academy indy link set. You should be able to get one of these for well under $10.

THanks Phil(Cool name it’s mine too)I;ll check it out!

I purchased the Academy Panzer IV set for my Tamiya J. I got them from Lucky Model w/absolutely no hassle. I have yet to use them, but they look good.

I used the Academy Mk IV track link set on the old Tamiya Mk III, since they both used the same tracks. I had to narrow the sprockets and road wheels, and file down the sprocket teeth to get the fit/look right, but the tracks themselves were great. No problems and the built/fit together well. Definitely a good bargain there.

“I understand that you’re relatively young?”

It all depends on where you are. To me he’s younger than I.

Phil,

Good work. Just follow through on the advice you’ve been given and you’ll be doing fine.
