Tamiya Tiger 1 (Mid Prod) Lots of Pics

Hi all, ive been putting this off for quite a while now. Im always nervous showing something new and it is my 1st tank. I read just about everything possible on weathering this sucker and also read through loads of old FSM posts. Its by no means perfect but i think it didnt come out too bad.

As always, comments and critisisms welcome.

Oh yeah, I zimmed it myself (Badly lol)

For those without Broadband, I appologise for all the pics.

Hey Guy…that looks SWEEEEET!!![:D]

Nice job with the paimt and the weathering! And that zimm looks perfect to me! Nice job all around–the tracks, cables and spare tracks all look exceptionally well-portrayed!

I’m curious though–did you get some dullcoat fogging where that light haze is showing up–or is that part of the weathering?

Make sure you hit the back of the turret stowage bin with some dull coat over the decal…looks like ya mised that?[:-^]

A build to be proud of fer sure! [8D][tup][tup]

Luftwoller ,

I think it is an ecellent first effort.

I think the tracks just don’t look right. Could be the lack of a wash or steel highlights on the tread contact points. I think you need to add some mud to the inside of the hubs on the outer roadwheels and try and work some mud in behind them also. One shot of the wheels at an angle shows the wheels behind them to be very clean.

Not sure about the weathering. Don’t know if the side hull is weathered or not. If so, you need to weather the entire hull and turret.

Your paint scheme and zimmerit are first class. You have the foundamentals down pat, just a couple of tweaks and you’re all set.

I’d go [tup][tup]. Keep up the good work.

Joe [:D][:D]

hey there, i like your tiger. nice job on the first time zimm. if i could give a few suggestions, i second the motion with doog and his dullcote suggestion. i notied that the back of the turret decal has silvered, also the top of the barrel looks a little over glossy. i think you did very well on this one, and i like it very much. also just a personal suggestion, i would tryto use a darker browner color on the chipping. i don’t think that the paint would have chipped to a german gray. it would have rusted over overnight. try van dyke brown, and i think you will be pleased with the results. hope this helps.

Looks good man. I think that haze is a buff over spray, but I think you did it a little too heavy that it looks like the buff is part of the cammo in some parts. Try a little less next time, and not so much over the entire model as it looks like you did! Great job though man, a little dull coat on the gun breach might help ya a bit too! be proud of this one!1

Hi All, thx for the replys. Theres a lot to think about.

Doog. I think a little more Dullcoat may be the answer to a lot of my problems. It was very hot in my modelling room that may have set the Dullcoat of too quick DOH! What about another dark wash? That might help to conceal a multitude of sins.

Panther. What could i do to the tracks to improve them? Would a wash of metalic grey do me any favours. I didnt drybrush the tracks much with silver on the contact points, do you reckon it needs some more? I will plaster a bit more mud around the concealed wheels. I didnt think they would be seen. But then when im looking at the pics i took. DOH!! again. Good call on mudding the drive wheels.

Rooster. Silvering is the bain of my life. Ill try a little dullcoat on em to see if that helps. It will also remove some of the glossiness. Good call on the chipping though. Ill ask Biffa for some of his van Dyke brown. He seems to have a good supply [swg]

CDNtanker. I did use some buff, a little too much as you said. I think if i give it a dark wash, it wont look awfull and will tone down the buff a touch.

Thank you all for your comments. This is a tough audience in the Armor section but hey, I didnt want you all saying it was gorgeous, cos its not. Hopefully i can improve it today and ill post a few more .

Thanks again.

glad your in good spirits after we all attacked you luftwoller. we’re all just trying to help and this is just a collective of our opiniors. i’m not sure if dullcote is the problem for your delcals though. it would sure take off that sheen on the top of your gun barrel, but did you use any kind of microsol on the decals? just in cast you don’t know, try to apply a little future on the area to receive the decals, this will ensure a smoother surface area for the decals to adhere to. after its applied, dab it with some micrsol, this will snuggle it down even more. once this dries, shoot it with another coat of future. then you can weather like normal. after all weathering, then you can hit it up with some dullcoat to take care of the gloss of the future. once again this is just my way of doing things, and i hope this helps. i also think that the van dyke will look great. try adding just a tiny amount of it in the center of your gray chipping. this will make it look as if you have fresh and old chips. i think that would look SUPER! anyway, still an outstanding looking kitty.

Hello Guy,

It sounds like the gang have given out some good tips on your build, These guys have all built some nice Tigers as well, so they have some “lessons” to share.

I will offer that this model is well constructed, but not “finished”. You think you are done, but, you’re not. The camera has unveiled flaws that your eye can’t detect. This premise, is the secret to ultra high level presentations.

  • Inconsistent weathering in the suspension
  • Spare track hangers incomplete (need the “bottom” brkts)
  • Markings appear glossy and not “blended” into the finish (inconsistent with wear)
  • Tow cables, tools etc. need some toning down and blending as well
  • Open TC hatch reveals no interior details, vision blocks missing

When applying weathering, no matter what the method you choose, try to imagine how natural light will hit the vehicle. Areas that need more “shadow” vs. areas that need “lightened” shades of color. This build is good, IMHO, sit down , take a big deep breath, and finish the weathering and make it great.

regards,

Steve

Luftwoller,

I would suggest and earth color wash on the tracks. Something along the lines of a sand/brown color. If the drybrushing on the tread contact points looks good in person I wouldn’t do anymore to them. Sometimes a picture can be deceiving. I usually highlight the guide teeth and when I take a picture the teeth look as if they have been spit shined, but in reality they look fine.

If I might make a suggestion on the decals. I’ve had similar problems even though I use setting solution. If I do get some silvering, I will use my hobby knife with a sharp blade a cut several slits into the decal (where the silvering has occurred). I reapply the setting solution and most of the time it will seep under the decal and eliminate or greatly reduce the silvering. A word of caution. Be very careful when cutting into the decal and allow the solution to work on it’s own. Don’t apply pressure or try and scrub the solution into the decal. I’ve had times when I’ve ruined the decal getting too aggresive. You can use this methed several times just give the decal time to dry/set before reapplying more solution.

You’ve got a good build and just a little work will make it better.

I applaud your effort to improve.

Joe [:D][:D]

I heard there was an aircraft guy that had jumped ranks… and it’s true. Looks good to me…(me who has never built a tank[;)])

I’ll be very happy to have my 1st tank look like that. Funny how when I finish a model… when I came back down to the bench…there is always a new plane kit in it’s place[%-)] Hmmm…curious…[swg]

Very nicely done for your first Armor build. Now get back to your Aircraft kits [:D].

Regards, Rick

That dullcoat fogging is NOT a result of too-fast drying; it’s the result of the excess heat EXTENDING the drying time and the lacquer attacking the acrylic pigments! DO NOT apply additional dullcoat! The only way too repair it is, unfortunately, to go in and do “spot repairs” with your airbrush.

In the future, use a hair dryer to speed up the drying time, and NEVER apply the dullcoat so heavily that you see an actual sheen of it laying on the surface of the model! Two or three LIGHT passes is best!

And experiment with that “future” stuff, if you decide to use it. A couple guys I know really didn’t like the way that it darkens the finish. Hope his advice helps! I still think the big cat looks awesome![:D]

Well i had an awfull Lot to think about, but hey, you dont post these thngs if your not ready for people to give there opinions on your work. For that i thank you all.

Anyways I started by giving the Zimmed areas a good wash to bring out some of the detail. After reading Doog’s helpfull tips i didnt give the whole model a fresh coat of dullcoat, i stuck to the areas i thought that need it. Like the Barrel and the silvered decals. Next up, i used more Mig pigments on areas that had had too much buff aplied to them and dulled down the tools a wash and more earth coloured pigments. Then came the tracks. I started by drybrushing more of the contact points, then i washed the whole track with a very dirty wash. Then used more pigments in and around the whole track. …errrr…think thats it. Anyhoo here she is. I took these outside for better light.

PS. Rick and Marc…You aint seen me here…Right?

Looks fine to me.You got some great advice to help for the next tank you do(If you do!!)

Looks great!!

Guy, I think That looks absolutely fabulous! The little things really out it over-the-top! It looks ready to destroy anyone who ventures into your garden!

I think that this one’s a keeper! WELL DONE! [:D][tup][tup]

Luftwoller,

That is really fine looking. I applaud your extra effort and finish [bow][bow]. She’s a real beauty. Take a well deserved bow, you’ve earned it.

Joe [:D][:D]

Thx to everyone who gave me the extra tips that turned out invaluable. This Armor section of the forum can appear a little daunting to the ‘Wingie Devotees’ like myself. But with all the good words and help, you never know, I may start my Tiger 2 or an Ausf g Panther i have in my stash.

Thx again all. Its been…Real

…Guy

Purdy big cat, bro. Jump back and check out the difference in your before & after pics…It’s quite a difference. Looked good to begin with, but I think now you’ve got it nailed. Great job!!![tup]

Thx Jthurston, im very pleased with it. I think the dark wash on the zim and the tracks really made all the difference. Its the knowing wether youve gone too far or not far enough.

…Guy

Nice job taking the suggestions to heart and doing some fix up work. It looks even better now! Not bad at all considering this is your first armor build.

Aren’t tanks fun? [:)]
