Tamiya paint recommendations??

Hello, I am currently building Tamiya’s 1/48 N1K1 and have a few doubts / questions about color choices and was hoping for a little advice.

First, directly behind the cockpit but still under the canopy it suggests painting it the same lighter green of the cockpit. This sounds reasonable, but I could see it being incorrect and can’t find confirmation or denial in my VERY limited resource info.

Second, the part between the engine and the spinner (I’m not sure what it is called) says it should be sky. I’m used to doing this gray. Is sky correct?

Finally, and not related to the directions, but I don’t think I want to chip the paint up too much, but maybe a little more than my regular fairly clean little bit of silver pencil here and there. Is it best to underpaint NMF and then chip the paint off with toothpick or something or should I just stick with the colored pencil?

Thanks for any help you can give. I’m really hoping to do this one up right, but have really failed at the research part of it.

Sorry i cant help with colour recomendations but i can share with you my fav. technique for paint chipping. First i airbrush testors aluminium plate and wait for it to cure.I then sray on the colour i want on my airframe and when its touch dry i use masking tape to peel of little "chips " of paint exposing the silver beneath. You will want to experiment first on a scrap model with paint ,drying times and tape brands as it is easy to over do it .But once you refine this technique i fine it looks great. Good luck ! P.s i find this works best with acrylics.

I have been working on a hasegawa zero and some of the photos show the firewall and cowl interior as a light blue, some sources say even met. blue.Hope this helps . Rob

Thanks guys. I guess I’ll just go with the directions. I suppose the worst that could happen is someone who knows more than me could come up and point out the error.

Olsen, I’ll probably try something very similar for the chipping. Thanks.

Re the chipping … look at Swannys site (don’t have the URL handy [:(]) via the Techniques and Detailing - he has a method using water and salt that looks really effective, and gives good results IMHO.

Salt Tech. is one of the best ways to go.
