This may have been mulled over before, but it’s new to me. I have a Tamiya P-47D Bubbletop kit. As I was looking it over and comparing with Bert Kinzey’s “Detail and Scale” book of the P-47, it seems that the cockpit in the kit isn’t accurate. From the book’s diagrams and pictures of actual cockpits, the kit’s details seem to replicate the “C” model of the Jug. Is that right?
Sharp eye there! You are correct in noting the instrument pattern is a copy of the “C” panel in Detail and scale. There is such minor differences only those with the Detail and Scale book would know and then I didn’t detect it until you mentioned it. In 1/48 I wouldn’t bother correcting it but it there is ever a really good 1/32 P-47 to replace Revell’s antiques I would attempt to get it “right”!
Given the accuracy of Tamiya’s kit, why did they copy the cockpit of a P-47C instead of a D? Maybe they didn’t think there was any difference? Just wondering.
Probably the same reason Tamiya put a scale 1 inch reccess in top of the P-51 flaps which isn’t there on the real ones! The whole pupose of having the flaps as separate pieces was to be able to have them in the down position. Now you have to fill and lose detail to have it correct! You have people who do research and make molds who probably aren’t even interested in the topic they are working on. It’s a “job” and “little” things get through the cracks just like on my job. It would be helpful for them to have a few “fanatics” check over their research before going to the mold makers. Not going to happen though. We will have to continue to use our “modeling” skills to correct the defects.
What’s more weird is that the P-47M has a new cockpit!
The P-47D sprues are included with a new sprue for the M version with new cokpit parts.
I’m no expert but can Detail and Scale be wrong?
