I have a strong suspicion that Tamiya will release 1/48 scale renditions of these two old kits sometime next year. There are those who suggest Tamiya simply “scales down” their previously released 1/35 versons. Though I do not necessarily share that school of thought, I wondered if any of you might share your opinions of these kit’s dimensional accuracy, and fidelity of detail. ( I understand the standards of the industry have improved dramatically over the decades since their release.)
Well, Tamiya isn’t just scaling down their 1/35 kits – Citroen car, Jagdpanzer 38(t) Hetzer, StuG III ausf B, M10 Tank Destroyer, M4A1 Sherman – that’s six examples where there’s no 1/35 Tamiya counterpart.
But the Matilda II is pretty long in the tooth. Many hull and turret misshapes to the real thing. Tiger Model Designs has a full resin kit due (dunno when). The Daimler Dingo is pretty nice but I think it’d be a disaster in 1/48 – too many fiddly parts. If you think the walls are out of scale in 1/35, then what’s it gonna look like in 1/48?
