Tamiya M4A3 74mm Sherman help

I just started working on Tamiya’s 1/35 M4A3 75mm Sherman. I am not as familiar with armor as I am aircraft, so I am needing some build advice. I did a search for past forum posts on this topic, but didn’t find anything relevant yet.

The plan so far is to have the driver and commander figures in place with their hatches open. But looking at it so far, it looks like it will be an empty hole with a figure in it and you’ll be able to see straight down to the tracks.

Does anybody have any recommendations for a good/easy/relatively cheap way to simulate an interior? I don’t want to do a full interior, but just hint at it, so it’s not just a black hole under the figures. Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions.

[P.S. I just found a previous post with the templates for sheet styrene fill-ins for the interior of the sponsons above the tracks.]

With the sheet styrene covering the bottom of the sponsons and the figures in the hatch you wont see much else. But a rough suggestion of the following things may be visible:drivers instrument panel, transmission, ammo racks… through the t/c hatch:main gun breach, radio, ready ammo… A look at the Squadron book Sherman walk around would be helpful.

You might like to have a look at any of the TD/Achilles kits which will give you the gist of tranny/drivers’ station, or google for Sherman interiors.
I have a book (somewhere) Inside the Great Tanks, (or similar).

Here’s a tweaks list for the kit which includes directions on how to fill in the open sponsons. Use the other tips as you wish – it’s really for people who want to ultra detail their model
