Greetings,
The Tamiya kit #35140 M-60-A3 shows two painting options. One for the Army and one for the Marines. Both I believe are based on the MERDC scheme.
My question is, could the scheme shown for the Marine version have also been used on the Army version? It is a two tone green. I know the MERDC scheme was changed according to the season and area of operation.
I really want to do something different from the basic and common green, tan, sand, and black.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Joe
Yes the USMC MERDC color scheme could also be used on the army vehicle.
HeavyArty,
Thanks very much. I was thinking so, but about all I ever see on the M-60’s is the green, tan, sand and black combination.
Whenever I get around to painting it, it should give it quite a different look.

Joe,
I’ve seen some really cool schemes over the years on the 60’s. My favorite is the scheme which adds the light gray. I’ve seen it at Ft. Carson Colo. (4th ID years ago) and Ft. Lewis Washington. along with the black there were green, brown and the light gray, sort of a “mountain” scheme, really cool.
Our tanks had the three tone in Germany, but after a while, you couldn’t tell. The camo became so faded and washed out the vehicles appeared brown from a distance…
Believe it or not, this A2 was retracked and repainted about 120 days before this pic was taken, a couple of months in the field and…

Good luck on your A3 build buddy…
Steve
As late as 1989, M60A3TTS in Germany used a modified MERDC scheme. The base color was forest green with earth brown as the secondary color. The third color was black but not in the V-shaped squiggles shown on the instruction sheets of the Tamiya kit. The black was more of a pattern similar to but not quite like the Nato 3-color pattern that eventually showed up on stateside National Guard A3s. The small splotches of sand color were left off except for where the bumper markings were.
We used the same color pattern spring, summer, winter and fall.
It seams to me that I remember a 3 or 4 color pattern sort of a spring color in the early 70’s.There was two shades of green for the predominant colors and a sand for accent color and maybe some black. It was a pretty combination as camo goes. Ask Rob, he would know the pattern. Greg.
Hey All,
Thanks for all the input. I have seen other schemes on the M-60’s but that scheme that appears on the box art seems to be the dominant scheme.
Rob,
When I was in Germany the scheme I reffered to was used year round as well. I just want something a bit different and the two tone green seems very appealing.
There’s another that uses earth yellow? and a brown and I think sand that’s rather eye catching.
Hopefully, I can get this thing finished and some pictures posted in another week or so.
Thanks to all,
Joe
Crewed M 60 A3 for a time. The last time we painted them it was dark green brown and black as Major Rob described , similar to Nato 3 color scheme. Looked great as I recall. Hope this helps.
ron b,
Thanks, but I want to do something in the MERDC scheme. There’s always newer stuff for the three color scheme. Going to have some modern stuff to do at some point, so one or more may end up in the NATO colors.
