Had to stop work on the floatplane while I wait for the Rosie the Riveter to be delivered. And since I can’t just around doing nothing…I started the Tamiya 1/35 King Tiger, kit 35164 with the production turret. 1st non-DML kit too. OMG… the plastic is dark yellow[:O]
Extra goodies that will be used are Cav zim (but I guess you figure that one out already), Jordi Rubio AL barrel, Eduard PE fenders, Tamiya PE grills and Tamiya indy links.
Probably could have saved about $40-50 if you purchased the Dragon kit LOL. However, I know we all need a challenge with an older kit. Good luck on this one. I love KT’s.
Thanks guys. I know it’s not much of a start…but a start none the less[:D]
Probably right. But I got this for free. Well…really I traded (don’t tell the aircraft guys) a Do-335 and a P-400 Airacorbra with some PE and resin bits forthe KT. That money was spent so long ago… it alomost doesn’t even count[:-^]
My 1st zimmerit was on the Pz VI Tiger (P), also Cav. Great. Loved it. This set is even better. This one came with the zim on a heavy clear plastic sheet. The other was taped to a piece of cardboard. The plastic is nice and sturdy making cutting to out easy as can be. I am by no means a zim expert but from what I’ve seen in pics online, the pattern looks just great as far as size and depth. And there is a good amount of irregularities and even some chipped areas too. Gluing with Slo-Jet CA gives plenty of work time. The im is just porous enough that a few drops of accelerator gets it finished off quick. Some of the detail are cast on the zim so you don’t have to cut holes to fit around a kit part to get the zim to fit. I am going to keep using this stuff.
That’s cool, I’ve only used the Cav zim once and I used 5 minute, 2 part epoxy, that worked pretty well, goes on kinda thick though, you gotta be careful.
I finished this kit in Feb, got the pics in the Dio section. Didn’t have any problems with the kit itself, did put alot of AM stuff on and in it though. Looking forward to seeing this finished.
Will also be watching this build with interest – I have the cav. set for the Porsche turret KT, and have been saving that job for a rainy week.
How time goes by… I still think of these kits as the ‘re-tool’ items, the new, improved, better ones. I only got them a few years ago, on evilbay. I could never afford them off the shelf, not when they came out and not these days. Dragon? What’s that? Eddie Murphy did the voice, didn’t he? [:D]
I’v got a tam KT also I’m about 35% done and am looking for some zim did you order that cavelar or whaterver it’s called zim if so what website? thanks!
Stick man, I have ordered from the directly and had no prblem but they are also available from online stores here too that may get a quicker turn around.
Haven’t gotten the usual amount of bench time[V] but did make a bit of progress.
Zimmerat on the turret is done. the kit sheet says there is section removed onthe side. An emblem of a knight on horseback will go there. the back plate has the raised details removed that will be replaced by the zim piece.
Fenders are getting installed, minus a few panels as I have seen in some photos. Oh yeah… and the bogies… lots of bogies.
LOL…that’s exactly what I was thinking: it seems like yesterday when the “new” Tamiya Tiger I came out and set the modelling world on it’s head…In fact, I feel that one kit set off the modelling wave of products we are still riding…then the Tamiya KT and Panthers came out. IMO, the Tamiya KT and Panthers still hold their own, and are the equal, in many respects to the DML offerings, especially if you want to do your own zimm or are modeling a late zimmless one (they also build-up from an engineering point of view better)…However, the Tamiya Tiger I had/has some basic innacuracies (such as turret shape) that DML has mastered…
Nice work on the bogies I painted and weatherd half of mine last night then had to take a break… hope you have fun painting and weathering all of em! are you going to camo them? or just strait one coulor.
Manny
I agrea the Tam KT and panthers are equil in meny respects to the DML ones but not to the smart kits there just sooo detaild.
