Tamiya made a 48th kit:
But I can’t really recall a 72nd kit by them. (Vaguely, perhaps. I think. Maybe not… [:p]) If it is 72nd, it’s gotta be from the 60’s or early 70’s. If that’s the case, it may have been good for it’s time…

That is the orginal series of kits that Tamiya produced in the late 60’ thru the 70’s. They are actually 1/50th scale though the box says 1/48th. For it’s time and though it is old the detail is actually pretty good and have built one about 4 years ago.

Which at the time I didn’t understand why the decals were off a little bit when I tried to apply them. Then when I found out it’s true scale is how know understood why. The decals were designed for the Hasegawa Frank. It still builds nicely and it looks ok next to the other IJN/IJA planes on the shelf.

I thought the Frank was released after Tamiya gave up the 50th kits, but I guess not. You learn sumthin’ new every day!

I think they used the 50th scale because the japanes (and alot of other countries)use the metric system whereas in the US, the industry mainly base their dimensions in the English system. Any comment on this?
great kit, just a little lacking in the detail department and the decals. fine resecced panel lines, and some raised. very clear and thin transparencys. no desplay stand.
RECOMMENDED!!! maybe over the hasegawa, cause its cheaper

I meant according to instructions it was made in 1972…not 1/72nd.

Do we recommend updating or just going with what is there and getting a better kit???

I’d say keep it. Sure, the Hasegawa kit is a lot “nicer” and has more detail and all that. But it depends on how you’re gonna build it.
If you’re building for the sake of building and don’t care about creating a masterpiece show-stopper, do the Tamiya kit. I’ve had this one a few times, never built it , but it’s a great kit in the box. Nicely molded.
A pal of mine did build one of these up, and it looks good. I’ve also seen some older reviews on the web for this one, and the only complaint was the lack of detail in the cockpit.
$10 was a pretty good price, and I’d say go for it!

For $10 it could be a totally messed up model and then messed up on my workbench and I still couldn’t get upset…
