i think your are absolutly right baout tamiya being a more diverse company. tamiya not only has military static models, but also RC’s, aircraft, autos, paint, and many more things. i just think in my small time getting back into the hobby, that DML has put out better kits in the 1/35 armor. i have only purchasd two kits from tamiya in 8 months, and the detail that they put into it, compared to DML was shocking to me. DML has crisp details, less moulding lines and flash, they include extras like PE, magic tracks, turned barrels, turned ammo, and many more things that have drawn the populas to their name, and they are cheaper than tamiya! while tamiya is still probably bringing in more cash, i think that have over-exhausted their kits, and have no more to produce, while DML is right on their heels producing better kits with extras and goodies. just my opinion.
