I am unable to source Tamiya flat clear, seems back ordered every where I’ve tried. In the meantime I have a couple of builds ready for flat clear, to finish them off. I have a fresh supply of the clear gloss and flat base. Anyone tried adding the flat base to Tamiya clear gloss?
If so, I’d appreciate your input, either good or bad results. If it’s problematic or just too touchy, I’ll just wait for the real deal. I’ll be spraying with either Iwata or Badger equipment, and have the ability to adjust pressure.

No I have not tried that. But I’m pretty sure that it would work. Tamiya flat clear base was originally marketed as an additive for their gloss paints to turn them into flat colors as needed. And I have added the flat base to Future to make that into a flat top coat. That worked just fine. But you don’t want to go above a 25% flat base to 75% Future ratio. A higher percentage of flat base and you’ll start getting real chalky/cloudy on the top coat. Experiment first on a paint mule to get the finish look that you want.
I don’t know. Test on a scrap kit or plastic spoon.
Are you trying to achieve a Semi-Gloss or a Satin finish? There are Semi-Gloss clear out in the market. Tamiya has it in their paint line.
Thanks, Stik - I have also used the flat base for additional reduction of paints that weren’t flat enough. Some time back I cut up some thin plastic sheet into test squares, for checking on finish results. So far the flat base and gloss mix seems OK, but I’m doing several tests to ensure ideal mix proportions after drying time. Thanks again, Stik.
