About 20 years ago I purchased a Tamiya 88 flak 36/37 kit and have finally gotten around to building it.

Though extremely “Partsy” it doesn’t match the detail of the modern Dragon kit, still, I have determined to build it straight out of the box with no PE or mods to the original.

I have a scene in mind and if I can pull it off, the lack of detail shouldn’t make a difference in the overall appearance of the gun. Here is where I am so far -

I think that I will go with this “Slightly more khaki” base color in lieu of the traditional dunkelgelb -

I think that I’ll use the crew from my Dragon Workshop Kubelwagen (modified slightly) in this dio., as they fit nicely into an Italian Theater setting.

Camo pattern sprayed on the gun / limber - and base coated the figures.

The unit insignia is home made. I said that I wouldn’t divulge the unit until it was done but I think that I am safe… this is a verified variant unit symbol for this unit but I’ve never seen it but from one source. I also added four kill rings (set back further than is standard) and a Battery ‘B’ letter on the rear right fender.

I really like these older kits… Looking good!
Thanks for sharing Razor
Have same kit in stash… it was one of first kits I brought when I returned to the hobby few years ago. Now you are tempting me… I will be following this with interest. [Y]
great job makes me want to build the one in my stash loved the pics

Thanks guys for the kind words. Weathering commences this weekend and I hope to have some more pics up asap.

Wash, dry - brush then wash again… lots left to do yet.

You kept this kit for 20 years? I’ve never kept anything this long. And though I had this one and its newer box with new figures built, I still have this one instock and unbuilt. It’s much easier to assemble than Dragon’s kits. Those are too complex and have too many parts, I don’t think I have the patience to finish one.
Your work looks so far so good. Looking forward to seeing your finished dio.
Did some more work on the weathering / shading yesterday. I also got the base coats and initial dark wash on my figures as well. Officer needs a bit more filling/sanding on his legs. I was going to keep this build basically an O.O.B. build but I feel the need to dress up the instrument clusters and do a little fine tuning here and there as it were. I will “scratch” whatever add-ons I go with … no PE on this one.

Started the camo netting and canvas section this morning. They will receive additional coats of white glue/water and then some paint. Figures about 60% finished and except for the tires being painted and a tweak here and there the gun is nearly done save the canvas section and netting. I hope to have both the figures and the gun completed by tomorrow and perhaps even start on the base.

Loving the camo net! [Y] Where did you get those? My best guess is from your medicine cabinet…
You are correct Andy, 4 x 4 gauze pad from the wife’s medical kit.
Thanks, rb
Thanks! Instead of painting the camo net I have seen somebody dying it with tea instead to darken it. I haven’t tried that… looking forward to your next update.
Got the majority of the netting colored today … just need to do a bit of highlighting here and there on it.

I really like the camo netting.
Looking good… I just saw my same unbuilt kit in my stash… I really should dig it out
Thanks for sharing the pics…
Nice build and kudos on the camo netting!
Now I’ll be sifting thru dealer stock at local shows for the kit! [:'(]
Thanks for posting [:D]
I’ve spent the better part of the day working on the figures, the netting color and finally finished and added the Tropical Helmet complete with Luftwaffe goggles. I am not satisfied with the color of the netting and will work on that as time allows.
