stikpusher: Some people will say that those particular markings were on Marion Carl’s aircraft. I can’t find any historical evidence that this plane was assigned exclusively to him. There are a couple of decal sheets that say White 2 was his aircraft. If you look at those sheets, they are taken from a photo of this plane later in its career with 19 kills markings. Marion Carl finished with 17 kills. I think this airplane was flown as it was available by whoever happened to be assigned to it. A lot of the wildcats had a lot kills painted on the sides because the crew chiefs would paint the kills that were accomplished by the pilot who flew the plane on a particular mission.

But even so, the Wildcat looks dame fine to me… And you’re right about Carl’s “assigned” aircraft… Every VMF pilot had one assigned, but flew whatever was available… Especially the Cactus 'Cats… One could find two or three different BuAer numbers on a Catus Wildcat… Data plaque, engine, and tail, lol… Those Marine and Army aircraft mechs were the original bunch that “did so much with so little for so long they were qualified to anything with nothing”…
And a special place in Hell waits for the sub-human bastige that took General Carl’s life…
