Sweet build! [Y] I read Doogs post about the black paints used on the Brit night fighters, calling for a real flat finish on the Beaufighter … looks like you nailed it! Always liked the copper cowlings on these guys too.
The “copper” cowl front was actually an exhaust “collector ring” (ie. manifold), taking the exhaust from multiple cylinders (14 on the Bristol Hercules) to a single exhaust outlet/pipe and actually could vary in shade anywhere from “new” to burnt/heated metal. It’s not usually painted as paint would just burn off.
I should have used a flash to do a close-up of the interior of cowls. I tried to represent the interior of the copper collecter ring with gun metal dry brushed with steel and burnt metal… got to get into pigments at some point.
To quote Manny & some other guy - winning!! Thanks for the “cowling” info. I’ve built one of these in 1/72 & didn’t realize the reason for the copper colour.
