Hi all, I was thinking of starting a 1/48 Tamiya A-10 that I had in my stash for a while. However, I seem to remember that it was not very well recieved by the modelling community and the Revell/Monogram one was favoured. I am not too clear on exactly why this is. I was under the impression that Tamiya is a top notch company but I guess they aren’t immune from making a turkey every now and then. So, my question is are there any specific issues with this kit that makes it an undesirable build?
There was a string about the A-10 from Tamiya a few weeks ago. It’s generally considered their poorest offering and the general concensus was that the RM A-10 was superior. I’ve not heard any comments regarding the HobbyCraft A-10 which I have in my stash but have not built yet.
Sorry for the late sign in but having being a former A-10 maintainer I just wanted to inform you that the Tamiya A-10 is of the Late 70’s/Early 80’s vintage and one of Tamiya’s lower lines of 1/48 scale planes (Tamiya started to make great aircraft models in the early to mid 1990’s). Right now the best Warthog would be the HobbyBoss A-10, then the Revellograms, then the Italeri, then the 1980’s Revell, then the AMT/ESCI/Italeri (OLD), for 1/72 scale, the best one out there will be a toss up between the Hasegawa’s or new Italeri’s then the Revellograms.
Also if you would go to the group build threads there was a group build of the A-10 this time last year and they would have almost all you info you need to make an A-10
In an effort to get the first A-10 model released, Tamiya modeled it after the OT&E aircraft. Through testing, many changes were made to the production models, external and internal. If you want to make a model of the OT&E aircraft, it would be a good kit. To build a early or late production aircraft, it would take a lot of modification and scratch building to turn it into a good model.
thanks for all the replies. I did do a search before posting but perhaps it wasn’t broad enough. Anyways, if it really isn’t a bad model (fit and quality wise) just inaccurate, I’ll give it a try anyways. thanks to all who responded.
I didn’t know enough to be able to tell about its inaccuracies, but I found it a satisfying build. I sanded and re-scribed the panel lines and added some PE, and painted it in a “what-if” scheme. Took first place in the hypothetical category at our local contest a couple of years ago.
Hey, thats a neat scheme! I am not up to the level where I am comfortable rescribing panel lines and such. Is there any fit issues that one should be aware of before they start?
