Tamiya 1/48 FW-190D-9 FINISHED!!!

Love it Frank. You are da man. Im in the process of decalling mine, so you never know, i may even post a pic or 2.

Great work though fella, Im with Dupes though. What made you pull it of the shelf when im sure you have a stash calling constantly LOL.

…Guy

Amazing work! I’m not much of a Luftwaffe person, but that Dora is one good lookin’ bird!

I told you It looked good. I can’t pick out one thing about it that jumps out. It’s more how the finish looks as a whole. You captured the look and feel of the late fw190D. When I look at it has what I would expect a color pic of that 190D should look like. If you have the squadron walk around then you have actual pics of blue 1 and I won’t bother posting them. Very nice work daywalker.

SHARP!

You totally nailed that one Frank. One of the finest 190’s I’ve seen. As phoenix said you really captured the look of a late war Luftwaffe fighter. We all tend to want to build the planes with the yellow noses or the red and white striped Doras but the fact is in 1945 per orders from higher up’s all markings were to be kept low key. Especially for any of the surviving experten. They did not want squadrons of Mustangs chasing after the plane with all of the kill marks on the tail or the flashy markings saying here i am I’m the experten come get me! Give yourself a big pat on the back for a job well done.

[:O] OMG!!!

I came home tonight hoping for a couple of comments on this bird, and LOOK!!! The praise all of you have lavished upon this build have truly left me speechless. THANK YOU, all of you. I will try to answer a few questions about her.

Devil Dawg- Thank you, I appreciate that!

Sean- You are too kind my friend! Thanks.

dlowman- Glad I could help inspire you! That is one of the best parts of this hobby.

KJ200- Thank you, I am glad you like her!

Nam- Thank you much my friend! SHe looked pretty good, just needed a little TLC.

Marc- Thank you, glad I could help make your morning!

Rick- Thank you, I appreciate that!

ian lanc- Wow, thank you! Glad you like her.

raptordriver-Thank you Andrew!

MKelly- Thanks, be sure to post pics when you get her started!

Gigatron- Thank you very much!

Thad- Thank you, pics of the brake lines coming right up! [swg]

Charles- That is an wonderful compliment, thank you very much!

Dupes- I don’t USUALLY revisit old builds, but the '109F-2 and this one never looked quite right in my eye in the case. So, what began as a "sprucing up, turned into a renovation! Also, I am sometimes overwhelmed by my “stash” and choose a quick redo over a fresh build. I have a few others in there I may do in the future, but these two are all for now.

Roy- Thanks for the O.T.T. [:D]

Harv- Why, thank you! Glad to hear you may build one as well. I hear that 1/32 Dora from Hasegawa is an awesome kit. Be sure to post pics! [tup]

Darwin- Thanks, much appreciated!

Mark- Thank you very much, you are too kind!

Mike- Thanks a bunch buddy! I’m still trying to reach the bar YOU set.

Guy- Thank you! Glad I could help motivate you with yours, looking forward to pics soon! [:P]

raider83- Why, thanks! Glad you like mine.

Stan- That is a very generous compliment! Capturing “the look” is the main detail I strive for. I stared for hours at that B & W photo of “Blue 1” and “Blue 2” in the walk around book. I generally don’t use PE or resin parts, instead building OOB or with some home-made detail parts. The painting, weathering, and general feel is the aircraft is what I try to capture. Thank you again, that means a lot to me!

scorpr2- Thank you!

soulcrusher- Thank you very much! I think the anonymity of the plane is one of it’s major appeals to me. That was also the reason for the markings on my Aleutian Campaign P-40 last year in the overall OD green without the tiger on the nose.

OK, here are a couple of pics of the brake lines and retract strut wiring. Sorry I couldn’t get a closer picture, but this should help. The yellow wires on the strut are three tiny fuse wires mounted in tiny holes drilled in the strut. I fed them up along the front of it, then ran them into the gear bay in the location I found in the walk around book. Thanks for looking! [:D]

It looks great!! I love the very subtle change in colors…Looks very old and used but not worn out!!! I have taken a few builds off the shelf to refurbish. I wish they came out half as good as this. Really sweet!!

I like, Frank! I have four 190s in the stash and one of them is the tammy dora. Have some extras for it too. When I was trying to decide what to do next I knew it would be German and ended up with the Albatros. I may just have to do the dora next thanks to your inspiring build!

Beautiful build, Frank! Those numerous little fixes really paid off. Just curious, what did you use/do to make the attachement for the antenna more secure?

Mark

bostonbruins34- Thank you for the feedback! I appreciate your comments, that is exactly the look I was going for. [tup]

hk- Thanks a bunch! Look forward to seeing your Dora, be sure to post pics! [:D]

Mark Joyce- Thank you! For the antenna, I drilled a hole all of the way thru the canopy and ran the lins down and back to where the headrest piece attaches. I made a loop, secured it around the peg there, then ran it to the post on the tail and made another loop there to secure it to a small notch in the back of the post. I also reinforced the rear canopy mount by drilling a hole in the rearmost unseen portion of the headrest and a corresponding hole in the rear deck for the pin to go. CAn’t see it unless you really scrutinize the plane, and now the canopy is REALLY glued on. HTH! [tup]

Beautiful build, sir! [bow]

Whoa! Brutal Beauty!

luftwaffle, trexx- Thanks a bunch guys! I appreciate that. [^]

Great job Daywalker. But let me ask you about the kit. I like the Dora but I keep passing on the Tamiya kit because I’ve read that the wheel wells are all wrong and the length of the wheel struts are too short. The propeller is supposedly misshaped, also. Your Dora looks great. Did you run into any problems there or are those supposed flaws on the Tamiya Dora not that important? 'Cuz I really want one of these real bad. And let me ask this while I am this subject. Are all Tamiya Doras the same casting? Did Tamiya ever update the kit to fix the flaws? Thanks.

Ranger2Seven-

Thank you very much for the compliments! I have read similar reports on the inaccuracies of the Tamiya kit, but decided that it looked enough like a Dora for me. The wheelwells are incorrect, and I don’t know if it’s the length of the struts, but maybe the size of the mainwheels that alter it’s stance. I believe they are all from the same molds, but build up nicely and look like a Dora. I had a few issues getting the wings mated up well to the fuselage, but that could just as well been my fault. I say get one, build it, and post some pics! [:D]

Frank,

you have worked really hard on this one and it shows. One of the best finishes that I have ever seen. One of the best Dora’s I have ever seen. Just beautiful work. Superb![tup][tup][tup]

[tup][tup] Very impressive and it looks flawless to me.

Darren and MKelley- Thank you very much, I really appreciate the compliments! I just finished building a late war Bf-109G-10, and have it primed and ready for paint. These late-war Luftwaffe birds are challenging to paint, but I love it! Here’s the 109 primed and ready:

Nice Dora—sorry I missed it the first time around…sweet…

Very nice, good job. Where’d you get the “hypo” tubes for the gun barrells?
