Tamiya 1/16 Modern US infantry - in NBC suit or not?

I have just purchased this figure. It looks very nicely detailed for a plastic kit, and comes with some nice details like the Camelbak, and it has two heads and a choice of two diferent poses.

The odd things is the uniform seems very baggy and over size. To me it looks like it is an NBC suit, but it doesn’t have a hood, so I’m not so sure. The box also says ‘Uniform also features chemical resistant design’ Which suggests Tamiya meant it to be an NBC suit, but there is no further mention of this. I’ve seen quite a few photos of US troops in Iraq, and the normal uniforms don’t usually look this baggy, I have a couple of photos that are getting close, but generally the BDUs are reasonable well fitting.

The NBC suits that seem most common, especially in the photos of US Marines, are Woodland cammo, box top photo doesn’t look like an NBC suit, and looks better proportioned.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Phil

I can only judge by this picture:

It seems that this soldier is wearing his BDU pants outside of the boots. If I remember correctly the NBC-Suit doesn’t have pokets on the side of the pants but it has them in the front.
You could try to get some 1/16 boots from a Verlinden or Dragon figure, cut the Tamiya figure at the right height of the legs and “stuff” the trousers back into the boots.

I think Tamiya meant it to be wearing BDUs, untucked, but I’m wondering if some of the references they used when sculpting the figure were photos of troops wearing NBC kit, and they ended up with a figure that is not really one or the other.

No, Tamiya got it wrong for an OIF soldier. Their soldier is actually wearing the older MOPP suit. This design does not have a hood, and the pants do have pockets like the BDUs. The latest chemical protective suit is called a Joint Service Lightweight Integrated Suit Technology (JSLIST). It is the current design that is more of a snug fit and has the hood. That is the suit you saw on Army and Marine soldiers in OIF.
Here is a photo: and a website: http://www.battelle.org/navy/chembio/jslist.stm

Here is the older MOPP suit: and a website for the MOPP suit as well: http://www.alpharubicon.com/basicnbc/skid600mopp.htm
Hope these help to clarify the issue.

Here is a link to a post at Armorama where a guy has added the hood to make the MOPP suit look more like the JSLIST. http://www.armorama.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=PostBoard&file=index&req=viewtopic&topic_id=25876&page=1

Thanks for the help, I’ve also had sugestions that it is wearing Goretex wet weather gear, but again no hood. I think I’l sculpt a hood, but leave the trouser cuffs. If I were to modify the cuffs to the tighter fitting type I’d have to piant it in woodland pattern, most of the photos I have seen of troops wearing the NBC suit are US Marines, and they are all in Woodland pattern.

New JSLIST comes in both woodland and 3-color desert camo. We had both in 3ID in OIF. First deployed units got Woodland, later deploying units got the deserts as they became available. Either is correct for OIF.

Thanks for that, I wondered about when the desert patern JSLIST became more common. I’ll do the conversion and paint it in 3 colour desert pattern.
