Tamiya 1/100 aircraft

I was out the pother day looking through the shelves of my local hobby store and found on the discount racks a bunch of tamiya 1/100 scalr iarcraft and picked up a couple (i’m a horrible impulse buyer.) Anyway i was looking to get some feedback ot the kits, pros, cons, warnings that sort of thing. The two I picked up are: Me 262a and Me 193 komet dual pack, and also a MIG 21 fishbed.

Thanks in advance for the info

I picked up the A-7 Corsair kit, and was underwhelmed. The quality of detail, and molding is VERY dated, save for the fact that it does have recessed panel lines. There are lots of sink marks, some misshaping of parts, thick canopies and virtually no cockpit detail and fuzzy exterior detail etc.

It is marked 1966 on one of the wing panels, and I suspect this explains everything. I’m not certain if this is a reissue of an old Tamiya, or another maker’s mold, but I’d give it a 4 or 5 out of 10. Not at all what one would expect from this company, even based on their older kits and the smaller scale.

This might not apply to the whole series, but you asked for personal experience…

Tamiya’s 1/100 scale aircraft series originated in the late 60’s/early 70’s with the intention of working in concert with other Japanese manufacturers to challenge the growing dominance of the 1/72 scale range which was popular in Europe and the US.

The idea was to create a 1/100 series manufactured by a number of companies, in a similar way to the 1/700th scale waterline ships series.

I believe that Tamiya couldn’t generate sufficient support form other companies to create the large series they envisioned, but went ahead with a small range of their own, the “crown jewel” of the range being a 1/100 scale B52(D?).
