Thanks for posting this. It looks amazing.

This thing looks stupid-good. Holy cripes.

People complain about the price. But I look at these sprues, the obviously loving attention to detail - not just in fidelity to the actual machine, but in the way the kit builds up, too - and I see passion there.

Personally, that’s a big part of why I don’t get all pissy about these high $$$ kits. Demonstrable passion is something that’s all too lacking in this world, so I’m more than willing to reward it when I see it.

In fact - and this will probably bring the hammer down on me - I’m more willing to pay for something like this Mustang than Revell’s latest re-pop of a kit that’s older than I am.

Been waiting for this one, saw it just a couple nights ago.
Ya won’t find me complaining about the price of this one and you’ll likely find it in the stash not long after it’s released. It’s about darn time this happened.

Heck with it. I just preorded one

this kit is worth the price in every way. tamiya didn’t cut any corners with designing this beautiful kit.

Japanese take great pride in their work.

my LHS is going to have the best price on this kit when they receive them.

Swung by the LHS today (Kings Hobby in Austin, TX). Walked past one of the counters and noticed a brown shipping box with the Tamiya logo on the side. It was open. Glanced inside and HOLY FRIGGIN’ CRAP - it was the P-51 preview sprues! The exact same ones in that link.

Looks even nicer in person than it does in the photos, and the rivet detail (yes I know they were filled and sanded, but I can certainly by the theory of the filling degrading and falling away, especially with the painting/stripping of D-Day stripes and such) is among the most sublime I’ve ever seen.

Getting this one for sure.

Be interesting to see a side by side build with it and the Hasegawa one. Any takers?

The Hasegawa’s cheap enough that I’d certainly consider a double-build. Not sure when exactly…won’t have room for a 1/32 'Stang display-wise until we move later in the year…but I think it’d be interesting. Particularly building up two P-51s of the same squadron - maybe some blue-noses at Y-29…

I think Dragon has one too. Or is it just Dragon, and I put hasegawa [8-)]

OK just looked it up. 1/32 Mustangs are made by Trumpeter, Dragon, and HobbyCraft. So to correct myself: It’d be interesting to see a side by side build of the Tamiya with either the Trumpeter or Dragon kits. Not sure about the Hobbycraft kits, as the couple of kits I’ve built of theirs have been bad, unless I just got lemons.

out the box tam will win against all kits but i think a little hard work into the hase kit with aftermarket will be just as great.

it all comes down to accuracy imo. hase isn’t the most accurate kit but whos going to nit pick.

i want to pick up this kit but im a little freaked out because skills aren’t the best to be building a top of the line kit. but it would be nice to see it sitting there for more inspiration. my shop will get them at the end of the month.

Doogs- how much is your shop selling them for if you don’t mind me asking?

they were saying retail is around $160 from what i heard.

If shape being accurate is important the Tamiya is first in my book, then Hasegawa, and then the 60’s Monogram kit. I’d put the Monogram kit before the Hasegawa kit except it;'s a lot of work to get rid of the working features. If you like detail and don’t get all het up about shapes then the Trumpeter kit might come second and the Dragon 4th. But that’s just my opinion. I am pretty tuned in to the Mustang at the moment because I’ve been developing plans for an 85 inch span R/C version with the use of North American blueprints and a P-51D nearby that I can study and photograph any time I need to. In my opinion based on what I have seen so far, if you are serious about Mustangs in 1/32 then the Tamiya kit obsoletes all the rest.
