Taking Sheen Out Of Oils?

Hey guys,

Painted a figure using oils. In the past I’ve usually used oils for the face and hands, and acrylic for the clothing. But this time I tried it on the clothing of the figure.

I first painted the base colors of each segment with acrylic and then used the oils for the highlights and shadows. The tonal depth and the blending qualities of oils are wonderful but while a sheen can work for skin, I am not too thrilled with it on the clothes.
Anyone know of a way to matte the sheen of the oil paint?

Time will do that. Be patient. Matte coating it would, I think, destroy part of this wonderful effect oils give to a painted surface. But you could try it. Just wait several days to make sure the oils are properly cured!

you might try a matting agent the winsor and newton brand is pretty good …or you can try leaving your figure under a light bulb .this helps matte the shine in oils as well
try and use a low wattage like 40-60 watts…or you will dry out the paint and it will crack…a couple of days under a bulb is usually sufficient…

Thanks guys. I think I’ll paint some tesp pieces up and try some experiments using both methods.

I would leave the figure for a couple of weeks at least, some oils can take months to cure fully. Then airbrush a light coat of matt varnish, I like Humbrol matt.
