Here’s my T-62 for the Cold War GB. Not entirely done yet, as there are some things I forgot about. This is the build I was working on when the power went out.
This is the old Tamiya kit, with an MB Models turret and AEF Designs barrel & fuel panniers.
Sorry about the pics. Once I get everything the way I want it, I’ll take some better pics. I also posted this in the GB forum, and of course at Panzer Pantry: http://panzerpantry.blogspot.com/
Hope ya don’t mind, but I used one of your pics to show you where the feed lines for the fuel tanks are located… Whether you want to add them or not is up to you, but they aren’t too hard to do, even on a finished model. With a super well-done model like that (even if it IS Soviet junk [;)] ), it’d be just that much more to push it over the top… I made mine out of 26-gauge wire. It holds the bends better and will stay put without glue if you drill the hole just a size smaller than the wire…
Looks great so far, but where are the turret handrails? I’m rebuilding an old one I built some time ago with someones resin turret, I’ve forgotten whos. I like your paint scheme. modelbob@hotmail.com
The turret is from MB Models. It’s been a long time since I used anything from them. Are they still in business?
Back in the 90s everything I bought from MB Models was a nightmare to clean up before I could even begin to use it. But this turret was different. I don’t know if they’re using a different molding process or what, but there was no cleanup required, aside from the usual rinsing of the resin. The fit isn’t perfect, as there’s a little bit of play with the location of the turret once it’s set in the bustle ring. But other than that, no problems at all. Just drop it in and paint it.
The barrel and fuel pans are from AEF (another company I had a lot of trouble with, part-quality-wise, back in the day). The pans had to have their runner parts sanded off, as is the case with just about any resin parts - but the parts themselves are top-notch, in my opinion, and represent the correct pans very well. The barrel is a little warped, but here’s the cool thing: It’s got a thin brass rod runnign down the middle of it, which enabled me to easily un-warp it in a matter of seconds. There are two little, tiny sinkholes on one side of the barrel. Now, I have pics of Eye-Racky T-62s showing those holes in place. So I took a leap of artistic faith and left them there.
Actually I was hoping someone would have that info. I’ve got pics of where the fuel lines go on an Eye-Racky T-72, but not a T-62. So Thanks! And yep, I’m prolly gonna put 'em on, now that I see where they belong!!!
Are there no additional lines connecting the fuel drums on the rear racks?
Absolutely 100% correct. Tamiya should retool their turret, because the rest of the kit is beautiful. Their turret is too pointy in the front, showing too low a profile. The problem is so bad that the box art looks like a different tank.
Not that I ever saw… Those were just regular ol’ fuel drums used instead of jerry cans… There’s a cable that runs from the rack to the hull that allows the TC to jettison them, but I can’t remember how it looked… It’s been about seventeen years since I was up-close to a T-62…
I have to agree with your comment about re-tooling the turret. Tamiya seem to be asleep at the wheel, with a Renault UE carrier and yet another IS-2 ( Dragon did about 4 different ones ). I gagged at the price on the Char B kit. I’ve got vac form of that one with very nice tracks…itcost me much less than 50 dollars.
Since there are many variants of the T-62, they could certainly crank out a revised kit. The Afghan model with the applique armor comes to mind. I understand you can order separate sprues from them, so why not a new detailing kit like they did for the Panthers and Tiger IIs? It’s a shame because while you can score the T-62 kit for about 12 dollars online, you have to spend at least that much for a resin AM turret.
