What color would have been underneath the exterior paint of T-34/76? I know the usual paint is Russian Armor Green but was wondering what showed when this became chipped. Any suggestions as to which hobby color to use to simulate this would be greatly appreciated too.
basically, red oxide as steve said,–if any at all – in my bible-- t-34 mythical weapons-- it alludes to no primer and says specificaly no primer on interior(excluding some parts delivered in primer , but had no top coat[:D]treadwell[8D]
Just don’t overdo the chipped paint as per the current fad. Really, really look at wartime pics and try to see if any occurred. I have one pic of a T-34/85 at war’s end in color and while worn, there’s no discernable chipping – not saying that if one got up closely to the hatches and extreme corners of the real thing that it was pristine – but avoid just aping what so many other modellers are doing. But again it’s all an interpretation of artistry vs. realism. You’ve got to choose what makes you happy.
Taking into account that there were cases where T-34’s were sometimes rushed right into battle with no paint at all-only bare metal- I would highly doubt if you’d see any red primer under the green coat; I would definitely go with bare steel. Given the well-documented pragmatic Russian approach to building tanks/weapons, I would be surprised if they gave even a second thought to priming any exterior surfaces; I don’t think they had any illusions about these tanks being built for longevity!
