Here is my new project: a T-34/85 in winter camo and scenario.
Nothing very fancy. Just an OOB model and a simple base, to try some new (to me) techniques.
I have already finished the base painting:
For the snow on the terrain I will try a mixture of white glue and micro-ballons, and for the winter camo, I will use gouache or acrylic. I haven’t decided yet.
Please keep posting pics as you work! I am getting back into it after a 20+ year hiatus, and so it is all new to me, and I am trying desperately to pick up techniques.
Hello I too look foward to the progress of your T-34/85,the fading of the paint job looks convincing. Thanks for sharing
A question about the kit,is this the 1/48 Hobby-Boss kit with the interior,I had heard that they were scaled down versions of the Trumpeter 1/16 kits, but didn’t know that Trumpeter put out 1/48 armor kits ??
Yes, this the 1/48 Hobby-Boss kit with the interior (which I discarded because I wanted to make something “fast and simple”), and from what I heard it is the scaled down version of the Trumpeter 1/16 kit.
The base I did it myself, with some wood for the base. A piece of “roofmate” to create de slope, covered with a mixture of wall plaster and fine sand. Finally I added small stones and the tree, which is, in fact, a root upside down.
But in the meanwhile the base and the painting suffered some modifications.
On the base I added some short vegetation form Noch, and finally covered everything with a mixture of white glue and micro-ballons to simulate some snow (not much, just a fine layer to cover almost everything.)
The painting suffered some harsh treatments. After placing the decals with Micro Set & Micro Sol, I sprayed a very fine and irregular mist of acrylic Tamiya white. On top of that I created some irregularities on the white zones, with a fine brush and using Vallejo Model Color White this time (this is a technique some guys call “mapping”).
Afterwards I applied an overall filter (ohcre colour, by SIN industries), and finally a very dark (burnt umber + black) oil wash on the details, recesses, etc.
WOW, Barruel, this is really, really looking terrific!! You have quite the artist’s touch with your painting skills! This is a beautiful white wash! [:P]
I like the snow look too–make sure you affix some to the tracks too though! They still look a bit clean for the conditions…
I’m excited to see how this one looks when you’re finished! Excellent work!
Nice beginning to the winter-white. I realize that it is still a work in progess, but one thing I noticed is that the whitewash in on all of the grab handles - it would seem that those areas of high wear would be the first locations to have the whitewash rubbed off.
A lot of work, in the meanwhile, but it was very useful and didactic because I learned a few “new tricks” and techniques that I will explore in the next projects.
Here ares some photos of the final product:
The flag is still glossy because of the final oil wash!
It was a final touch of color that I wanted to introduce to the scene, in a “soviet war propaganda poster” kind of way. Probably not reallistic, but with a dramatic effect!
