I wanted to know if one made these planes in 1/72, 1/48 or 1/32 scale by any large company, garage kit or otherwise may of made either of these planes, resin, plastic, vacuform or even metal. I know Airshowmodels.com is coming out with terriffic resin planes but they are so far the closest one out there in this subject. I hope someone can lead me in the right directions. Thanks

Airshow Models will be doing some 1/32nd scale resin Super Chipmunks. It looks like they are going to start off doing the fixed gear Chipmunk that belonged to Skip Volk and was sold to Art Scholl after Skip’s death. I believe they also plan on doing Art Scholl’s retract-gear Chimpmunk, as well as Harold Krier’s fixed-gear Chipmunk. To check out everything they have and are going to do go here:
Would not be surprised if you have been there already. The fellow who does the decals posted some preliminary artwork for the Volk/Scholl airplane. They are also going to do the markings for Art’s Pitts S-2A to be used on their S-2A kit. They are also going to do a Pitts S-1S – really looking forward to that, as I want to do Bob Herendeen’s N266Y. [:D]

I believe Airfix had a regular chipmunk in 1/72 and a decent BC-12D
could be made (kitbashed) from a J-3/L-4 kit (there was a 1/72nd And I think

You jogged my memory. I built a couple of the Airfix Chipmunks many years ago. I believe that Airfix also had a 1/72nd Auster, which is basically a T-Craft from the firewall back.

According to Aeroclub’s listing, the Chipmunk kit is injection-molded. Typo maybe ? I wonder if it includes both canopies like the Aifix kit did.

Hi JGUIGNARD The Aeroclub chippie was definitly a vac-form but they may have done an injection mould one now. The one i have i built about 12 - 14 years ago and i had had it for a few years then. It only had the standard RAF type canopy dut i think it would not be too difficult to mould the bubble type that the Canadians used…Gregers

I build almost exclusively in 1/48th and am not adept at doing vacu-forms. If the Aero-Club kit is indeed now injection molded I may just give it a try as far as doing a stock airplane goes. For the aerobatic birds will go with the 1/32nd’s from Airshow Models.

Hi JGUIGNARD That chippie was my first vac form and i did a reasonable job of it i don’t class myself as an experienced modeler and i found it fairly easy i now look on vac kits as a challenge the vac kit that i have on the go as a long term project at the moment is a blackburn beverley now that IS a challenge. Well, I wanted to thank Gregers, JGUIGNARD and Rdxpress for your responses. It seems that Airshowmodels.com is sweeping the house when it comes to aerobatcic airframes which to me is great news since I have seen their resin kits and I am MOST surprised at the level of detail and the overall quality of the kits!! I do have a question about the Taylorcraft Auster. is that version of the T-craft side by side or one in front of the other like the Piper Cubs?

Judging by the “greenhouse” on the Auster, I would guess that the seating is tandem. It looks like converting an Auster kit to a T-Craft BC-12 might be a little “interesting”. Margaret RItchie’s airplane was converted from side-by-side into a single-seater with the seat and controls moved to center, and I am thinking that Duane Cole’s airplane was modified in a similar manner.
By the way, after many years of sitting outdoors at Flab-Bob airport, Margaret’s T-Craft is now at a new location and receiving some TLC.

I am not sure on this but if memory serves me correctly the seats in an auster are side by side. it is ages since i last saw one but i i’ll look through my photos and try to find out for sure …Gregers
