1:192 is a good scale for destroyers. There are PE sets for generic railings and ladders. I am doing a German ww1 destroyer in that scale. It is about 21 inches long, a ww2 ship would probably be a bit bigger but not unreasonbly so. Hull shapes are not terribly complex.
I was a destroyerman during the FRAM years . No two actually came out the same ! Yeah I know , there’s the drawings . Our ship , the U.S.S. OZBOURN D. D. 846 was somewhat different than the final drawings too . Some things had to be changed to allow the FRAM to work !
They did INCLINE tests on us , but no one was prepared for the audaciously WORST rolling we ever did . I can remember thinking , one time the Helmsman and the Telegraphman needed safety belts .There’s nothing more scary than rolling so bad , that when you roll , all that can be seen out the wheelhouse door window is water .
I was Glad when I went in the Marines after Thirteen in a Sailor Suit . I got the Midway ! Comparatively except for plane ops noises , a liner as to ride . If water was seen it’s because I was at my gun station on the starboard deck-side platform ! T.B.
