Cheers for the feedback guys. much appreciated. Mike. do you work on Pelican 22?. I’ve worked on a Shack MR3 at Newark Air Museum and have been working on a model of that one for years now. really must get it done.
All the best.
Greg.
gregers, no i dont work on it (wish i did) a friend of mine is part the crew so i get to go on it alot and take loads of photos of it . I must get my model done but its a nasty kit its the old frog kit.
mike
Very nicely done! And a very interesting set of markings too…a lot of people dont know about the South African involvement in Korea–they were fearless pilots and they had a great reputation for really going after the enemy. They also had a reputation for not ever giving in to the North Koreans when captured. A tough, brave bunch for sure, and I have never seen those markings on a build! Good work
Cheers Guys. Yep the South African people are a hard bunch and I am lucky enough to have some as friends. I’d love to out there some time and see that wonderful country. A visit to Pelican 22 would certainly be in order of possable too. I would love to see a shack flying again.
All the best.
Greg
Here are some pics of pelican 22 i took on her last run.

Thanks
Mike
Hi Guys,
Just an interested bystander here. The talk about Pelican 22 is interesting to me because I served for 3 years at Ysterplaat on Wasps and Alouette’s at 22 Sq. I had plenty mates who worked at 35 Sq and I stood guard at DF Malan AP often enough, so I had a lot of contact with the Shacks. As a matter of interest where did the name “Pelican 22” come from and what’s special about this Shack?
Geoff
Pelican 22 is the call sign , like pelican 16 that went down in the sahara dessert on her way too the UK and peilcan 22 is the last flying shack in the world its just a pitty that there is nobody in SA left to fly her.
Mike
Many thanks for those pics Mike, awesome stuff. It’s a big shame about Pelican 16 but a miracle that the pilots managed to get her down to save the crew. 22 looks in super condition there Mike. Lets hope that we will se that beautiful airctaft in the air again.
All the best.
Greg
