Subjects You've Neglected?

I was thinking that regardless of you preferred subject area (armor, aircraft, etc) that there are certain subjects that “must” be modeled, right? If your an armor builder then you’ve surely built a Tiger? Every airplane modeler has built a 109, right?

So what subject that most modelers of your preferred genre would consider mandatory have you neglected?

For me mine come in the aircraft category. For armor I’ve built all the Tiger Is and IIs, Panthers, etc. I’ve not yet completed a Zero or Focke Wulf. I’ve done multiple 109s, Mustangs etc.

Well, I specifically avoid the ME-109 as a been there, done that (about 40 years ago) and I see sooo many at shows.

But I have avoided a whole genre- real space. I spent my career in the aerospace industry, and think I built my last space kit in the seventies. I have had a longing to get back into it, though. As I look at my collection I have so little of the type of vehicle I spent my life’s work developing :slight_smile:

I did build Glencoe’s Jupiter C with Explorer last year, and I bought the Revell lunar lander. Time for me to build up my collection!

As a primary car builder the list is long… In a nutshell:

59’ Cadillac Eldorado

58’ Ford Edsel

57’ Chevy Bel Air

63’ Corvette coupe

There’s more but that’s what I can think of off the top of my head. I have the kits for most of them, just haven’t built them.

Mike…are those common builds among car guys? I’m admittedly ignorant when it comes to auto modeling. Love cars, but for some reason never took to modeling them.

I guess I have “neglected” some aircraft, tank, ship or car that I didn’t get to before I cut down to my current build theme,but, I don’t see it that way

I didn’t build a Stuka back then,but, I am a USN modeler that used to build UK Chipmunks,I never built the Karl Mortar,but, I once built 48 StuG III as a single modeling batch,I don’t build 54mm figures, but, I used to paint 4 boxes of the actual styrene Aurora US Army figures in a batch (paint stuck better to them in those times),I haven’t built a Yamato,but, did build at least one each of the IJN Skywave DE 2in1 boxings

109, 190, Hurricane, Spitfire, Tempest, Hayate, Zero, P-40, P-36, etc, etc,F-15 and F-16 when they were invented,Tiger I and II, Sherman, Lee, Grant, Priest,Centurion and M-60, T-55,Missouri,well, you get the idea,I built all of that, and had more to build,that is why I cut back

hard to consider anything neglected,unless I hadn’t built a Skyhawk or Phantom,then I would be kicked out of my Genre

Interesting…I would say my great avoidance is certainly ships. I’ve got a few in the stash, but never seem to get the get up and go to start one. But I’m planning an epic build of Zvezda’s Dreadnought for 2013, so…

In terms of armor, my built stock at the moment is so light that there are a ton of gaps. I’ve done a Sherman, an Achilles, a T-34/85, Panzer III-L and IV-G. No Panther, Tiger or KT yet. No artillery.

In aircraft, I’ve got a few glaring holes. I’ve never built a:

  • P-40
  • Stuka
  • Zero
  • Hurricane
  • P-39
  • Hellcat
  • Corsair

Lord knows I’ve got them in the stash, but have never put one through the bench before. Of course, since I’ve come back to modeling, I’ve built 25 kits. And of those three have been Jugs and three have been P-51s…

Wow. No Zero or Corsair, Doogs? Glad to see I’m not the only one that’s failed to pay homage to some of the most modeled subjects.

I wasn’t really thinking in terms of avoiding whole genres since we all have those we prefer. I tend to rotate between mostly German armor and WWII fighters. When I first joined up here I was apparently ending a long run at armor. I got the jet bug with the Vietnam GB and have done two. In that time I’ve added a few new jets to the stash, but now really want to do a - gasp - 109! It just be the 9th or 10th. I think Confucius was right though.

I am an aircraft modeller with very big gaps when in comes to “the classics” Not build but in the stash: p-47, p-51, dc-3, bf-109 Not even in the stash: corsair, fw-190, any modern jet

Good grief, Borg. Turn in your modeler card. You can not have all those classics in your stash and not have built at least one!![:P]

As I usually build whatever strikes my fancy, I’ve built something in all the genres. I guess I haven’t really neglected anything special but just haven’t gotten around to building it yet. It’s in the stash and I’ll get around to it (hopefully before I go to the great workbench in the sky). If not, my grandkids will build them for me.

Nope, not a one! Though I’ve got Tamiya’s F4U Birdcage, F4U-1A and F4U-1D, Hasegawa’s AU-1 and AccuMini’s F2G in the stash. And I recently picked up Tamiya’s new-mold A6M5.

But I’m about to crack into a new Jug here soon, and probably another 109 soon after that (Cyber-Hobby’s new 109E-3 perhaps, or the Hasegawa G-14 as a Swiss tall-tail G-6).

I like to think that I have all the basics covered so far in Armor and Aircraft. If not now, at least in the past.

Not many i know build the Edsel (even if it’s a good kit). i’d say the other common ones are 69 dodge charger or yenko camaro.

pretty much yeah go to any NNL show and I garuntee you’ll see at least 30 or more 57’ chevy’s in all formats from stock to gassers, rods, etc… 63’ Vette is pretty much like the Tiger 1 of auto circles, even my armor friends have built one as their only car.

Jugs, 109’s, P-51’s, Corsairs, Fw’s, A6M’s, P-38’s, I’ve built 'em all, to the point where I cannot fathom doing another one of 'em at this point - maybe somewhere down the road. From my preferred genre (the rigged ones that scare the bajeezus out of so many aircraft modelers), the only one I’ve yet to tackle is a SPAD.

Also one group of models I somehow never built-even though I was enthralled as a child during the 1960s by American space exploits.

I noticed recently that Hobby Lobby has the AMT Man In Space Rocket set is stock.
Most likely I’ll start with that kit.

From my NASCAR days, I never built a Dale Earnhardt Black #3.

Hmmm…if you’re building NASCAR kits often then this is probably the most egregious act of neglect!
