i have seen articles about using marine styrofoam, i have looked for the stuff but can not find it , are there other suitable types of styro to use for building up hills and bases out there? thanks for your help everyone!
Any styrofoam will work. Go to your local hardware or lumber yard & you’ll find tons of it, mainly 4X8’ sheets. Also, just about any craft store will have styrofoam more designed for crafts. They have specialty shapes, such as balls, that could be useful.

thanks rick i will check it out
The model railroad guys seem to use tons of this stuff , and most of the data I’ve seen from them would indicate that blue foam is the prefered foam followed by the pink. (I’ve seen blue, pink, tan and white - think the color indicates density, with blue being the highest). The Home Depot I was in last week had blue, pink and white in 1/2", 1" and 2" thicknesses in stock. Be prepared though, it’s really messy to carve and shave (unless you buy one of the electric carving tools - and if you do, use a good respirator when using the tool). And you’ll learn to hate static electricity.
thanks for the info q i will have to check home depot today i have to pick up some plexiglass today and i can check out what kind of styrofoam they have there
Short of buying the hot-knife or hot-wire tool for cutting the stuff, I use the extra long ( I forgot which #) X-Acto knife blade in the heavy-duty handle to cut styrofoam. It is somewhat better than using a saw, which makes millions of static charged foam bits that are a pain to clean up!
Yep… Been doing some insuilating @ home… got scraps of the 2" thick sheets…
