Sturmtiger in the mud

Not much of a story, just an abandoned tank…

That mud looks nasty! [:P] What’d you use to make it look wet like that?

Sweet!

Just a couple of comments:

  1. I like the build. As I recall, you posted the completed build in another thread? It looks familiar…

  2. For future reference, when taking your photos, consider taking one or two ‘panaoramic’ shots of your whole scene before coming in for the close-ups. It helps the viewer get a better sense of what is going on.

  3. In pics 1 and 2, it looks like you have a pretty significant gap between the upper and lower hull that, on up-coming builds, you might consider filling with putty or the like

  4. I do like the mud, but I think, given the environment it implies, your vehicle is not nearly dirty enough. You have some mud carried up onto the fenders and running gear, but the rest of the hull is pretty pristine. Take a look at some of the WIPs done by the doog, wbill, Wingnut, and Manstein’s Revenge. They demonstrate some great techniques for weathering that would really go well on your build.

  5. Again, for future reference, consider drilling out the muzzle of the machine gun with an X-Acto or a drill press

  6. I just looked at it again, and WOW, I gotta say, I like what you did with the tracks - they look pretty sharp

  7. Last comment - I know you are portraying an abandoned tank, but when you do that you should try to imply why it was abandoned: did it run out of fuel? suffer battle damage? get stuck in the mud? Maybe positioning things to imply one of these (for example, open up fuel caps, or have a track blown off, or have one side buried in a muddy ditch) would make the intention more apparent

I agree. Ground that soft would have left this vehicle a complete mess. The gook would be everywhere.

[:)]

Actually, I think it looks a skosh too wet… Might dial it back a bit and flatten the high spots while leaving some standing “water” in the ruts…

dude… me and my friend sitting with me both agree that your tank is sitting on top of a fudge brownie…

psstoff995 The mud looks wet because it is wet. What you see is real water. I mixed real dirt from the garden, water, white glue and Humbrol’s brown. The result is what you see. It turned out too wet but I put the tank in it anyway, kinda liked it.

bbrowniii Thank you very much for taking your time to write your opininos/thoughts. I always appreciate it.

1.This is the first time I have posted the Sturmtiger’s photos. I have posted an Elefant before and a Whirbelwind.

2.You are right about “panoramic” photos. I have, in meantime, taken the tank out of the mud as I didn’t really like the box, a bit too nerow, can’t build a ditch there.

  1. The gap between the upper and lower hull is there because they are not glued together. The tank came with a partial interior, four huge granates and the gun’s breach. They don’t really look good after painting. I may glue the hulls together.

4.I agree, I’ll dirty it up.

5.Will drill. You think exacto knife is OK? I kinda build on cheap, don’t relly want to buy a special drill, which I am sure some guys here have

6.Glad you like it [:)]

7.The tank was abandoned because it was stuck in the mud. That is why I took it out of this “mud box” and will put it in something larger so that a muddy ditch can be constructed.

smeagol the vile Given the amount of activities in my home, fudge brownie wouldn’t last 5 min…[:D]

Thanks for taking my comments in the spirit they were intended - as mere comments, not as criticism. It sounds like you have some good plans for this, so I’ll be interested to see your progress with it.

As to your question regarding the drilling of the barrels - an X-Acto knife will work, but a really small drill bit would be better (hence, my mentioning the pin vise).

WARNING if thats real dirt becarefull, freeze it, or boil it first, to kill any living stuff inside, dont need any of that in your kit.

hahaha and to think you were about to take a bite of some brownies! [:P]

that’s a very interesting technique- I like how it turned out, was it still wet when you took the pictures or did it dry like this? I’m curious how it drying looking wet if this is the finished product- white glue?

I agree about trying to sterilize the dirt- but can’t beat those results!

The soil has been sterilized. I baked it in the owen for 30 min at 300 degrees. I think I killed them all [}:)] It was still wet when the photos were taken, I liked how it looked. I don’t know what would it look when dry as I took the tank out because I would like to put it in a wider base so that a ditch can be constructed into which the Sturm-T slid and got stuck. There is another recent thred somewhere here with a Tiger, the mud looks awsome when dried, have a look here

Yeah that does look awesome- good luck on the ditch build! Make sure to show us the progress
