I am almost finished with Tamiya’s 1/35 Sturmpanzer Brummbar and I have a question. I have done A LOT of research and have not been able to find many pictures of the Brummbar with the side armor plate. Did the Germans use this extensively? Or was it maybe in a certain theater. Any help pictures would be extremely help full!
You can find a substantial amount of Brummbar pics online. The Brummbar did use side armor plates, and they either had them put on at the factory or in the field. Almost all the pics I have seen when I was building the kit was with damaged or a few missing side skirts and with zimmerit. Very few Brummbars did not have zimmerit, which was field applied.
When doing side plates, dent, bend, scar, make them looked used. The mistake I have seen, a guy or gal will detail the crap out of a tank, put on side skirts that look fatory fresh…what the hey!!! Remember…side plates get hit BEFORE the tank does. Something to think about.
Issah + Moses (Insert Biblical Reference), Thank you for your replies. The internet is a funny thing, isn’t it? Almost all the reference pictures I have found, there are only a few with the “side” plates on. Most that I have found do not have them. As for the zimmerit, I have read that most of it was applied on the assembly line up until 1943, and the “honeycomb” pattern was used to reduce the weight. Just goes to show you, no matter how hard you try you will probably never make a perfectly “historically correct.” model. Oh well that is half the fun! [:)]
