What do you guys use to keep your wheels on toothpicks while painting them.
I use modeling clay and have been doing it for a while and that’s been ok long enough for the paint to dry but lately the clay has been hard to get off the wheels and I’m looking for something else to use.
I’ll use a dab of superglue
I use Elmer’s Blue Tac, I just roll a little ball that I push into the wheel backside, then stick a toothpick in it.
It has a bit of greasy feel to it (to keep from lifting off paint on walls for posters, etc) but cleaning it up with a little iso or thinner dries it out so your adhesive of choice will hold the wheel in place on the kit.
I dont mess with any of that tac stuff for this, I just jam a few toothpicks in there, ,mind you, I do aircraft wheels. I know the road wheels on larger scale armor will have larger diameter holes to fill, sucker sticks can work too.
Light press fit.

I used double sided tape…since I use acrylic, by time I paint one side I can move to the other. There is no right or wrong…it is what works for you

I’ve heard of people using silly puddy, will that work or cause problems?
I use a cirlce template…no toothpicks involved.
I actually use spare pieces of sprue. I just whitle down one end and then use it for the roadwheel. It has the added benefit of being re-useable. Just stick it on and pull it off and reuse.
I use sprue also, but I heat it up and pull it, then cut it at the pointy end, then jam that into the wheels…
I am inthe use the spru camp…I never have been that consistent with heating and streching so I chop away till it fits.
I wrap tape around my stick until it’s at the right diameter then push in for a snug fit.

I use either tooth picks or bamboo skewers. I picked up a few packages of bamboo skewers several years ago for a dollar each. I must have 300 or 400 of the things. they do everything from stir paint to hold parts and are easiet to handle than toothpicks.
There is no such hing as a stupid question. Stupid is when you don’t ask and pretend you know the answer. I use diffrerent sizes of sticks to hold parts. I use toothpicks for small parts but I find that it is too short. I use barbecue sticks which I find in the supermarket. I also take home ( I do ask the waiters) extra bamboo chopsticks form the restaurants. I find it very useful for parts with larger diameter holes. If need be, I sharpen the tips to fit the holes. I will try to post some pics later.
