Stupid Mistakes

Impatience gets me every time – it’s like I’m 10 years old again.

Tim

Yep, every build I make a stupid mistake. Before I read this thread I thought it was just me being an Aggie …

I assure you, its not just you. I frick up something on all my builds…for fun sometimes LOL.

Heres a goodun. I built something memorable, cant remember what. When photographing my models, i put a piece of coloured card on the bench with a bend in so as not to show a sharp edge. I place my model plane on the card, ready to photograph it…and the card straightens out…fast and catapults my plastic lovely onto my metal seat and then the floor. Doh.

The moral of the story is, make sure the front edge of your card is secured by a bulldog clip LOL.

All,

I love the responses!!! This thread was started out of frustration but I’ve learned a couple of important things.

  1. We’ll always make mistakes[B)]. Correct them and learn from them.

  2. Most importantly be able to laugh[(-D] at ourselves and keep a sense of humor!

Thanks for all the replies! Keep em coming.

Every single model, i have a lot that are unfixable and are VERY nice kits by dragon and trumpeter that are halfway done just ruined, thats why i usually stick to figures

I have knocked over a bottle of glue or paint on my hobby table a couple of time. I have done it a couple of times. It makes me feel very, very stupid.

I actually managed to knock over a jar of Tamiya extra-thin liquid cement. How do you knock over one of those wide, squat, square bottles? I don’t know, I just did it. [B)] What was in the path of the cement spill? A (short) length of indi-link tracks that I was assembling at the time…[xx(] Luckily enough this length was to live in the upper run, behind the side skirt, so no huge loss.

Well, for ME, it never fails that some critical part that I’m painting or gluing gets launched into the ether, never to be seen again. I partially solved this by stapling some plastic paint covers across the front of my bench and draping it over my lap, that way, small parts that USUALLY drop in my lap are easily found. Still haven’t solved that “launching” problem…somewhere in my basement are HUD displays, landing gear struts, joysticks, actuators, antennas, so on and so forth…

As with me, practice makes perfect!!!

I owe, I owe, its off to work I go!!![:)]

My 1/72 Academy F6F Hellcat sat in my display cabinet for about two years, but it had an odd look about it that I could not quite put my finger on. One day it dawned on me that the landing gear legs and wheels were assembled inboard the gear doors. DOH! [:-^][oops]

and now for the converse, the reverse, the opposite…

has anyone ever had the PERFECT build from start to finish? if so, what was it because i wanna build THAT!

I have yet to experience such joy… mistakes are part of my finishing skills [xx(]!

cheers

andy

Oh god, that’s a classic![#wstupid]

The unfinished Dragon airplane kits are normal for everyone. Some of the most detail and worst parts break down of any kit ever designed. You really have to have to be totally dedicated to finishing one of them otherwise most of them end up back in the box and stuffed back in the stash. Trumpeter is not much better on some of there kits.

A good tip I picked up here about cutting those small photo-etch parts fron the tree that like to lanch when removed from the tree. Leave the photo-etch tree in the plastic sleave with the cardboard behind it and cut the part of the tree while it still in the plastic. It works great. No way the part can launch because its trapped in the plastic !

Yes I have! The Tamiya 1/48 Fw 190 D-9. Everything came out just the way I wanted the first time!. Of course this is the only time it happened!

How about assembling the model, filling all the seams, painting it…then holding it in your hand pretending its flying while making jet noises and dropping it on the kitchen table? Its not funny at the time but ya can’t help but look back and laugh.

P.S. Please tell me I’m not the only one who did that?

Soulcrusher,

Congrats. That’s an awesome looking Dora! I thought the HE-100 would be my perfert build[:(].

Fly-n-hi,

I like to fly them just to see that look on my wife’s face like “there’s something wrong with you”[(-D]

Fly-n-hi,
You are not alone. I “fly” all my builds. Well, except for the tanks. I “drive” those.
And I do REALLY good sound effects too. Especially machine gun sounds.

soulcrusher, that’s good to hear and the plane looks great! I have had good luck with Eduard kits… But nothing has ever been truly smooth. something to aspire to! [;)]

PS: How do you guys place the dotted lines around the text to quote a previous post?

Recently, I had made a two-piece windshield camera mount for my tornado chase vehicle; the smaller of the two parts was really tiny. I had painted it and while it was still in the tweezers, I carefully put the tweezers in the small bench vise and left it for next session. When I began my next session, I took the tweezers out of the vise and PTEEEIRRRNG! The part was launched so quickly I had absolutely no idea where it went! A 20 minute search with the flashlight yielded nothing; for all I know, it could be in the operating room where I had my hernia surgery last September. Chalk another loss up to the carpet monster.
