StuG IV and stowage

I am building the old Tamiya kit and wanted to add some stowage. I have searched the Internet for reference shots and found few…PLENTY of the III, but few of the IV.

Did the IV ever have the stowage rack on the back like the III or was that unique to the earlier version?

Thanks!

Since many, if not most, of these racks were field-built, it’s entirely plausible that you would have seen them on the Pzjg IV’s as well–the problem with the scarcity of pics is only because of a general dearth of photographic coverage (and/or photo processing ability/opportunity) later on in the war. Just because they don’t exist though doesn’t mean that there wouldn’t have been examples of them.

Have fun with it! I built a Pzjg IV with a rack too…

That makes sense to me!

Doog,

It depends on which version of the StuG III you are referring to. The G’s had a factory manufactured rack added towards the end of 1943 in response to the crews adding stuff in the field…but not all Gs were fitted with the racks due to periodic shortages/delays in the racks being available so some later Gs have them, others don’t, depending on which photos/vehicles you are looking at. I agree though on the high probability that the IVs would also have some sort of rack. Space inside the III and IV was limited and, since there’s no worry about a turret needing to traverse, the rear deck is ideal for it.

Great info to have, Bill; I did not know that specifically about actual factory racks–thanks for setting it straight!
