HEY,
I was wondering how to strip chrome off of chrome plated parts. I need to take it off of an engine part. Any help would be appreciated.

Try Castrol Super Clean. That seems to be the stripper of choice these days.
Ray
You don’t have to use any chemicals, just soak the part in white vinegar for a few hours. The chrome will disappear without affecting the plastic. [;)]

HEY,
Thanks pete. I was hoping to use something that would be easier to clean up.
Randy
Randy…
Try soaking your parts in 409. Works just fine for me.
Jon
Ordinary household bleach in a little warm water works fine. Make sure to rinse thoroughly though.
I use Simple Green. Just soal for a day or two, and scrub and rinse. It’s safe, and is a great paint remover as well.
Lee
HEY,
Jon, how long does it take in 409? I am trying to compare times and how well it works. Thanks
Randy
Hey dubix88,
This link has an excellent article about comparing paint strippers: http://www.bonediggers.com/1-3/strip/strip.html.
Unfortunately, it doesn’t include 409.
Ray
You can also use Comet cleaning powder. Add just enough water to make a semi-thick paste out of it. Smear the paste all over the part you want to strip. Let it sit for a few minutes. Then scrub it with an old toothbrush and rinse.
You can also put this parts in amonia, works very well.
You can also use it to stripe Tamiya acrylics.
Randy…
Soak parts in 409 overnight
Jon
I need more ideas guys.
I have never had a set of chrome parts that wouldn’t strip, well until now!
The usual bleach didn’t phase them, Whites, 409,Castrol, brake fluid, vinegar, NOTHING is working! I have had stubborn AMT chrome before but this stuff is eerie!
Don
Don, two words. Simple Green. It WILL work, may take a few days of soaking.
Lee
They are soaking now. . .and it appears they are doing just that!
Just over night so far, so I’ll let them sit.
I wonder if AMT would consider chrome plating my 1:1 bumper, the stuff they put on seems indestructable!
Don
AMT Chrome IS indestructible,…unless you don’t want it stripped, then it scratches and chips when you look at it.
Lee,
It worked! I would recommend Simple Green to all of you for this. It took a while but the chrome is gone. Thanks again Lee.
Don
My stripper of choice is Eagle One Etching Mag wheel cleaner. Just pour some in a jar and drop in the part. If the E One is fresh, you can literally watch the chrome disappear - I’ve seen it completely strip a part in less than a minute. Curiously, the label warns you not to use it on clear-coated wheels, but it won’t remove the clear coating under the chrome. Use tweezers to remove the part and rinse in water; the stuff is not nice to your skin.
I have no idea whether you can get this outside the UK but i use Mr Muscle oven cleaner.Put the parts in a plastic bag and squirt the cleaner on then leave for 20/30 mins and wash off.

Well, you know, my favorite stripper works over at Bare As…oh, wait, to take chrome off?!?
I found that like paint jobs that get all messed up , the best way to take off chrome is to use the cheap 2 1/2 gallon containers of engine degreaser that is sold at Wal-Mart. The stuff is only $5 per bottle and it’ll take off the chrome in about 15 minutes. Just make sure that you wear GLOVES!!! (Latex not cloth!!)
Good luck!
