Some of the parts are chrome on the sprues which I thought… Great saves me painting them… But obviously after removing them from the sprues and sanding the nubs the chrome has been removed… And the same will happen once I glue parts and remove seam lines I’m assuming?! …
So Im guessing my only or best option is to strip the parts of chrome and repaint.
What is the best method of stripping the chrome? I read somewhere about household bleach but it wasnt a very detailed write up… Infact the most I got from it was drop them in bleach and hope…
Any advice or tips appreciated… Obviously any tips to save me stripping them would be even more appreciated lol…
I used to use Purple Power but now I use a degreaser called Super Clean to remove chrome. I think that it works better than PP. You can also use Super Clean to remove paint from a botched paint job. You can buy it at an auto parts store.
You have certainly indentified most of the reasons why folks strip and re-do kit chrome. The one other main one is that many folks find kit chrome ‘toy-like’ and not realistic.
I have used a variety of things including bleach, oven cleaner, windex, et al. Now I too use SuperClean and it was probably Johnny from whom I got the idea. I bought a gallon container a few years ago, nice size to have IMO.

You say you’ve used bleach I’m ussuming this works?.. What is the process do I just leave the parts in bleach and if so is it a quckish proccess or will I have to leave it for a length of time? If I leave it to long will it cause any adverse problems to the model pieces?..
I don’t remember much about using bleach so I must not have been terribly impressed with using it, maybe someone else might chime in.
If you have any on hand, you might cut off a piece of chromed sprue and see how it does. The time required depends, not all factory-chromed sprues strip the same.
What you need to use is Mr. Muscle oven cleaner. Works like a charm and does it in 10/15 minutes. Just put sprue or parts in a small tub, spray with MM until parts are covered well, then leave for 10/15 minutes then wash off. I used it the other day to strip chrome from exhausts on my Tamiya Ferrari kit. So simple and doesn’t cause any damage to the part(s).
