I’m building the Trumpeter Pz.Kpfw IV Ausf D/E Fahrgestell and need the white string for the crane to look like rusty cable,

I’d soak the string with white glue just before adding it to the kit and apply a weight to the end to keep it straight and taut as it dries. I would not go for a rusty look, however, but more of a greasy black. Rusty metal is weak metal and a cable snapping under stress can really ruin your day.
