Strenghts: weathering (My favorite part of a build, I always like taking an old kit that doesnt have the best details, and try to make it look great with weathering)
Weakness: One thing I need is an airbrush, which does limit my builds a lot, but once I get it im sure I will have trouble mastering an airbrush. Also I rush my work sometimes and cut off just a bit too much with the exacto, or apply too much glue because I am in a hurry. So I need to work on patience a bit. Good thread idea MR.
Thanks for reminding me, Fast Heinz: I haven’t even touched a figure since I got back into this after a 10 year hiatus, yet I keep buying the figure sets I think I’ll use “when I get better at 'em.” Gotta start working toward that! (Hence the procrastination!)
Ah the age-old dreaded HR question where you have to demonstrate extraordinary creativity in answering a negative question with a positive answer without being really honest… [:D]
Strengths: Focus and patience, even with tedious or repetitive tasks. I can literally sit for stretches of 5-6 hours in a single day working on a project and get totally immersed into it. One of the reasons I love the hobby so much, it’s a great diversion.
Weakness: Desire for perfection on every build. I’ve yet to complete a project where I can honestly say I was 100% satisfied with it, mostly because I know where all the little flaws are since I built it. [;)] A while back I would have said weathering, but I’ve gotten into the habit of thinking about it as a three dimensional/multi-layered process of blending and creating to produce a final product vs. just a single step and that’s made all the difference in the world.
Strengths? Hmm. If it counts I guess I would have to go with “Creativity of subjects” Never will you see me throwing a sherman or a tiger together. Nope, little known obsolete russian tanks and the BTR-152 is where it’s at for me.
Weaknesses: Knowing when to stop weathering. Mixing paint consistencies for airbrushing. Decals on non-flat surface. Patience (I can spend tons of time for a build, but it is agonizing waiting an hour for a paint coat to dry before weathering.)
strengths: i can figure stuff out in a complex build, kinda see it done then do it , my scales are 1/35armor 1/48(planes) but i do alot of air brushing for a friend who works exclusively in 1/72 so he says airbrushing fits here.
weakness:almost any new armor kit on the shelf, knowledge of subjects, and my arch enemy future floor polish[|(] .good topic mr.mr
strengths… willingness to try new techniques, and I am getting half decent with my airbrush.
weaknesses… the closer i get to the end of a build the more I become impatient. Making more work for myself as I glue in weld lines, and leave nice fat thumbprints on turrets. Maybe thats just exersise for my strengths…trying new techniques to cover up my screwups lol
Stregnths: patience, my research library, finishing & weathering, figure painting and creativity in laying out dio’s.
Weaknesses: not careful enough about glue drips/runs, impatience/hastiness in building, not reading girections closely enough, stupid about inadequate ventilation, too many distractions during summer! (guitars, dirt bikes, PSII and hot young girlfriend!!!
My strengths are building, and to a certain amount scratchbuilding. I have even been approached by a well known company for technical advice and building masters. Anything German WWII Railway Related. Plus research. My computer books keep getting religated to the basement to make more room for Armor Books.
My weaknesses are mixing paint to get the right hue. And deciding when to paint the tracks, on tanks.
…wow…you must know your German railroad subjects—impressive…
…yes, the age-old question of when to paint the tracks…this has been a common dilema ever since single-links replaced the rubber bands…a lot of good modelers seem to build everything and then go back and paint tracks, tools, etc. on the model…I think this helps make the model more cohesive looking as everything is blended and weathered together…
For me, strengths would be willingness to build for my own pleasure, competent assembly.
Weaknesses would be painting (spray cans and brush only, no airbrush), figures, willingness to build for my own pleasure (at the expense of physical accuracy, ie: I don’t mind that the Academy M1A1 turret is visibly off, that sort of thing).
quote: “Wow, self examination time. Good subject.”
…thanks, another good reason for the thread is hopefuly we will remember everyone’s strenghts, so in the future if we are having a problem in that area we know who we can call on for help…!!!
I have to STRONGLY disagree, RB, that "willingness to build for my own pleasure " is a weakness for ANY reason! I think that if you’re NOT doing exactly that, that you’re missing the PRIMARY reason for our beloved hobby!
Think of how many guys probably leave kits unfinished or unstarted–the dreaded “95% syndrome” as we seem to have coined it–because they’re wooried about finding perfection, or about receiving criticism on it.
NO SIR! If you’re enjoying each one of your builds, then you’re far ahead of some of us in finding “modelling nirvana”! My hat’s off to ya! [C):-)]
[#ditto]…although he did list that as a strength as well…
…I feel that all modelers build for themselves…As it is sometimes such a solitary hobby, it is hard to imagine anyone doing it for any other reason than the satisfaction of achieving something that they feel good about…
strengths: research, interest in many different areas, i enjoy filling and sanding but i am working on armor which is a little more forgiving than a modern jet, weathering.
weaknesses: still fighting, though somewhat successfully, perfectionism which causes procrastination. i have an air brush but have never airbrushed. tendncy to switch areas of interest at the drop of a hat which explains soviet tank, at gun, german ww1 bb and wooden armed virginia sloop in various stages of production.
PE pieces are my weakness. They are new to me. Either they weren’t available when I used to build (like 17 years ago) or I just didn’t know of them. Working on these is when I find myself spouting profanities most regularly! [soapbox]
