I am building another Sherman (M4 105 Howitzer) and for the umpteenth time it occurred to me that the searchlight on the turret has never change thru the years. If it it indeed is a serachlight how come no manufacturer has bothered to put a lens on it or better still include it with the clear parts like headlight?

The Tasca Firefly VC was the first kit to give us a lens. It is a different presentation because the ribbed shroud is omitted (ala the Tamiya and DML kits). Theoretically, you could use the Tasca searchlight, add the clear lens and find an ABER PE shroud and you’d get a very accurate representation.
Thanks Roy, I know you would come to the rescue. I did’nt know that Tasca has the right one. I do not bother to check Tasca out because of the expensive price. It’s practically double the price of a Dragon. The reason i post this question is I have made a clear lens cover and was about to cement it to the lens. I remember that the Black Magic Sherman by Revell of yore has the same searchlight.
It’s a dual purpose light; mounted, it is useful as a search light, but it can also become a handheld spotlight used like a flashlight. The lens sits back a bit because I believe the cowling is collapsable.

Only on some select of the newest Sherman kits do we get the clear headlights. On most we get just a solid lens where we have to paint that part silver, or for a more realistic light, drill it out and replace it. As far as the turret spot goes, for a bit more variety, it was adjustable in azimuth and elevation, so you can pose it in various postions to give your kit a bit more “animation”. I remember Tamiya’s old Easy Eight Sherman also having a very horrid representation of that spot lamp.
