Steel Wheels Question

What do you use to paint the contact points on steel wheels? Enamels or acrylics? MM, Tamiya, etc.? I have been tring to settle on one type. Any input would be appreciated.

You mean where an all metal wheel meets the tracks? I use a low tech media recording device often referred to as a pencil (my Kentucky wife calls it a writin’ stick).

After painting the road wheel the base color, I rub the side of a pencil around the circumference of the wheel. It gives a metallic gray color to the road wheel edge.

Yes, thats where I meant. And I use a pencil also. I was just fishing for new ideas. Thanks for the response.[:)]

I use Testor’s enamel “steel”. Takes a bit of weathering to tone it down, but I like the way it looks.

I know people who mix black in with steel to tone it down also. Seems to work out pretty good.

Just like the tracks, if the wheel has been inactive for a while, ( depending on the
environment) it will have a dark or rusty brown (shade?) on the wear areas with only
a negligible steel finish.
Alternately, if the wheel has been recently active it will have a more metalic appearance.
Usage and environment of the original subject are major factors when considering the
colors and techniques to acheive the desired effect.
As stated many times in this forum, go check out a tracked vehicle at a construction site.
Keep in mind though that civilian vehicles are investments and will more than likely be in
better shape than a lot of WW2 armor.

Hope this helps.

I like Tamiya metallic-grey. I use it for tracks also.

I use Humbrol #27003 polished steel. If you want a recently used sheen then paint ot on, leave for 30 mins or so then buff it with a cotton bud. It comes up quite nicely doing that.

I like the Tamiya metallic-grey also, I,ve also like pencil.

Good idea, I’ll check that out. Also check out the Tamiya Metallic-Gray, and Humbrol.
Thanks.
