Stearman PT-17 *WIP*

Starting my 1/48 Lindbergh PT-17. Have tons of color reference photos already as there are 4 owned by one guy here in town that I had the pleasure taking pictures of. Got this kit for free from a local IPMS member.

Here is the kit contents:

Very basic kit but should be fun and look good when it’s finished.

Josh

I’m assuming you’ll be wearing shades for this build![;)]

What colour scheme are you going for?

Karl

Josh-

One of my all-time favorite aircraft, I’ll be watching your build closely! Not sure if you’re interested, but Lonestar Models makes a resin cockpit for this kit. [tup]

Sheesh! What a blast from the past!

I think I built one of those long ago!

But it looks like a potentially great kit!

Should be a fun build. The kit is very basic but fairly accurate. With some TLC it can make a great model. Keep us posted as you progress.

Regards, Rick

Thanks for tips guys. Daywalker, I will definately be picking up that resin set. Anything to give the kit a little more detail. Squadron has a clear vax canopy for it but none in stock so it looks like i’ll be using the OEM ones.

I picked up a set of black and white block letter and number decals for it so I can replicate the markings of the local Stearman planes.

Here are a few pictures:

So, which version do guys vouch for? They all look good to me so i’ll do whichever one you guys like best.

Josh

Josh- My vote goes for “253”. [:D]

i agree “253” looks the best to me

Alright, well, the significant other also thinks that’s best looking one too so it looks like i’ll be doing “253”.

Thanks guys,
Josh

I vote for “117253994”

Great pics!

I agree with namrednef. I like 117 the best. Cool idea for a prodject and thanks for sharing those awesome photos! Good luck and post some work as you go.

Soulcrusher

obviously, you need to buy 2 more kits and build all three!

look forward to this build, love the pics, THANKS for sharing!

[#ditto]

I would really like to find 2 more to build but, (at Squadron.com), for $17.00 each it’s kinda’ steep for this kit. At my LHS they have three 1/48 Hasegawa F-4’s for $15 each and I don’t have to pay for shipping …

If I could find them for a little cheaper i’d be all over it!

Josh

Alright, small update.

Got the engine pretty much finished. Amazing how crappy a close up picture will make something look but how good it looks with the naked eye. I scratch built some spark plug wires with soder. Almost invisible but it gave me some practice.

Also have the pilots close to done. Just need to paint the goggles silver and they’ll be finished.

Q: What yellow should I use? The plastic is damn near the right color so I want to try and match that as close as possible without having to mix paint.

Josh

I’ll tell you where you can get more for cheap, if you finish that darn Nate. [;)]

Okay, fine, you win…check greatmodels.com, they’ve got the PT-17s for $9.60, currently in stock.

Cheers,
Alex

Aaaahhhh, I know, I need to finish it. I wish I would have known some of the things I know now about modelling when I started that one. I wish I could redo it. The only thing left is to paint the canopy and it’s “done”.

Josh

Got the figures done. Pic is just a mock up, nothing is glued together. (Note the mobile model box, lol). Still need to figure out paint and wait for the resin set.

Josh

Gotta change your thread title to “Stearman N2S WIP”… [:D]

Chrome Yellow (FS 33538) for all US Navy training aircraft from Febuary, 1941.

I completely forgot that you replied to my question Hans, lol.

Ok, so I searched Squadron and this is what I get when I search “33538”:
http://www.squadron.com/SearchResults.asp?offset=0

And this is what I get when I search “Insignia Yellow”:
http://www.squadron.com/SearchResults.asp?offset=0

Which one do I use as they all claim to be “33538” and are all different?

The only yellow I currently have is Tamiya X-8 “Lemon Yellow”.
