Starting the AM Sturmovik

Well i know several modelers on this forum have built AM’s IL-2m3 and i just want to know what i should be looking out for. I have read the instructions several times and i plan on building it by the book but if you have any tips to make life easier (and more fun) i would like to know about them. Thanks.

I want to see it when your done!!! The sturmovik is when my faves…

Just be warned that after all that extensive cockpit work-- the fit in between the fuselage is VERY tight…almost to the point of not fitting…but maybe that’s just my experience [:(]

It’s a fine kit with very few faults. Biggest problem I had was fitting the landing gear and struts after assembling and painting the rest of the model. Probably should have put the landing gear in during wing assembly, but I hate doing that cause I usually screw it up during subsequent handling for paint and decaling.

I built it right after it hit the market. In those days my dinning room table doubled as my modeling table. That particular evening my wife fixed fish with garlic bread - I remember it well. There I sat, eating my fish and garlic bread happily examining my wonderful AM model when CRUNCH I had bit down on something. What, I wondered, could that have been? I fished out a mouthful of half chewed garlic bread to find, much to my amazement, the front windshield of the aircraft!!! Oh it was horrible, all crunched up and blended with soggy garlic bread. In desperation I called AM and explained exactly what had happened hoping that they would take pity on a fool like me and send me a new piece. The guy at AM had a good laugh and assured me the piece would be in the mail - no charge. Whew, I thought, it could have been worse. A few days later a small package arrived from Accurate Miniatures with my part and two after dinner mints - compliments of Accurate Miniatures. So, what to watch for? DO NOT EAT GARLIC BREAD WHILE MODELING!!!

hey swanny, got any photos? I also have a few questions I have come across so far.

What color should I paint the tube connecting to the fuel tank?

How did you paint the Control panel?

How did you mask the pilot’s armor? Did you only mask the front side or both sides of the pilot armor windows? Did you paint both sides of the armor panel?

photos? of what? swanny eating his windshield??!![:0]

Mmmm, plastic.
Robert, No photos at the moment and I really can’t recall on the paint questions. I’ll dust it off and take a look at the model tonight and see what I did, after all, it has been a few years since that one.
